In the fall of 1872 he moved the family to Nickerson, KS. He was a farmer. He enlisted on 24 May 1864, in Princton. IL as a private in Co. H of the 139th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and mustered out in Peoria, IL, on 28 Oct 1864. He served in and about Columbus, KY; Cairo, IL; and scouted after General Price from St. Louis, MO.
