He entered the U. S. Army as surgeon's mate in 1814 and served until the close of the war. He then settled in Plainfield, N.Y., and was a member of the state legislature 1830-31, when he was instrumental in securing the repeal of the act imprisoning for debt. He removed to Chicago, Ill., in 1836, and to Walworth, Wis., in 1840. He was a member of the Wisconsin Territorial Council 1846-7, and in the Legislature there for three years. He was associated with Elder William B. Maxson and Elder Eli S. Bailey in editing the Seventh Day Baptist Missionary Magazine and in compiling the hymn-book first published by this denomination. He was the author of the hymn,"This is the day which God has blest."

G. Douglas Clarke has a letter that Henry (in Walworth, WI) wrote to his brother Joseph (back in Independence, NY) on 15 Feb 1842 describing the bountiful conditions in WI for the early settlers.
