Miles Carl eloped with Clista Emberly of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and went to Watertown, NY where she died in childbirth. Miles gave his newborn son to Sophronia and Ruth Staples to raise. The family story says that he was the footman and she was from a very wealthy family. She was disowned by her family and the two lovers ran away.

Clista Emberly eloped with Miles Carl to Watertown, NY and later died in childbirth. It is believed that she was disowned by her family because of her liason with Miles who was possibly the footman. After looking at the marriage certificate, I suspect that the date was possibly altered at a later date and the original date was February 03, 1881. This was shortly before the birth of Carl and the death of Clista.
