The son of Marion D. and Jessie Crandall Gray, pioneer residents of this area, he was born on October 9, 1889. He began his career as rural mail carrier in 1907 as substitute for his father and became a full time carrier in 1909, retiring in 1951.
Earl Gray served as rural carrier under four postmasters, namely, Charles Button, Geo. B. Keith, Alexander M. Paul and Lawrence E. Austin, present incumbent.
The first year he drove a buckskin pony and two wheeled cart over the 27 mile route with one mail sack. Later, in winter, he hired a team and sleigh from the livery stable which was owned by Randall Thompson, Ned Damuth, Charles Hudson and William Klitzkie. Since the horse and buggy days he has driven many makes of automobiles. And in the 41 years he drove enough miles to have covered 17 trips around the world.
He was a great grandson of Henry Beebe Crandall who came here from New York state with Joseph Goodrich. Crandall settled in what is now Milton Junction and Goodrich in Milton.
On Feb. 4, 1914, he married Eva McCulloch who survives him. Other survivors are three sons, David and Kay of Milton Junction and Bruce of Milton; five grandchildren; and a brother, Herbert E. Gray, Puyallup, Wash.
