Mrs. Miriam Clark, Pioneer Teacher, Dies
Was First to Open Public School in Small Log Cabin in Berlin,Wis.
Death Came During Visit
Mrs. Miriam Clark, Berlin, Wis., died at 9:30 o'clock Thursday morning in the residence of her son, Delvos (sic) W. Clark, Cornwall avenue, West Allis, aged 85 years. Death was due to old age, Mrs. Clark having been in failing condition for some time.
Mrs. Clark was the first public school teacher to teach in Berlin, she having opened school in a log house there when she was 17 years of age. She was born in Hornesville, (sic) N.Y. With her parents she came to Wisconsin in the old style immigrant wagon, going first to Milton, Wis., and to Berlin a year later. After ten years as a school teacher she was married in 1851 to
Norman Clark, who died on July 30, 1888. Her maiden name was Miriam Davis.
None of the hardships that came to the pioneer settlers escaped the family. With no market near at hand all produce was hauled to Milwaukee by wagon. In Milwaukee produce was bartered for necessities of the home and these, in turn, were hauled over the trails. Luxuries were not to be had and such a thing as sugar was for a long time unknown in the household, because it was not obtainable.
Two weeks ago Mrs. Clark came to West Allis, not believing that her health was failing as rapidly as it actually was. With fortitude she held out against decline and only three days ago did she consent to take to her bed.
She is survived by three sons, Delos W. Clark, Frank L. Clark and George N. Clark, West Allis; one daughter Mrs. Eva Whitney, New York; two brothers, Jerry Davis, Davis Junction, Ill., and William Davis; one sister Susan Fuller, and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be held in the Seventh Day Baptist church,Berlin, at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon.

In the town of Berlin, Wis., July 30, 1888, Mr. Norman Clarke, aged 72 years. Mr. Clarke, an uncle of Eld. Joshua Clarke, was born in the state of New York, and about 37 years since came to Wisconsin from Ohio. The bereaved wife, three sons and a daughter, with their families, mourn the departure of a kind husband, father and friend. A very large assembly gathered at the Seventh-day Baptist church to pay their tribute of respect to the deceased, and listen to a discourse from Eccl. 7: 2. May the Great Healer comfort and cheer the sorrowing ones, and bless the event to sympathizing neighbors and friends. W. W. A.
