Florence Almeda (Barnhart) Sayre 1875-1933

Funeral services for Mrs. Geo. O. Sayre, Milton, who died suddenly Aug. 23rd, were held over to Monday to enable her sons A. Gerald Sayre of Cornwall, N. J., and G. Merton Sayre, who was visiting at Riverside, Calif., to attend.
Rev. Carroll L. Hill assisted by Dr. Edwin Shaw, officiated at the services which were held at the house at 2 o'clock and at the congregational church at 2:30. A male quartet sang three selections. Burial was in Milton cemetery with the following as pallbearers, T. I. Place, Dr. A. L. Burdick, Rolland Maxson, Fred Crandall, W. M. Lanphere and W. K. Davis.
Relatives from out of town in attendance were Will Barnhart, Miss Edith Barnhart and Mrs. Stanley Barnhart, Oconomowoc; Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Clarke, Edgerton; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Sayre, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Sayre, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Loofboro, Albion; Miss Leona Sayre, North Loup, Neb.; Mrs. Dora Barnhart, Pinehurst sanitarium, Janesville.
Florence, youngest child of Emily Clarke Barnhart, was born in Fulton township on July 28, 1875. She was married to George Sayre on Oct. 1, 1895, and lived in this vicinity all but the one year spent at Nortonville, Kans.
Early in life she became a member of the Milton Seventh Day Baptist church, having been baptized by Rev. Wm. C. Whitford, and was active in its affiliated organizations as long as health permitted. During their residence on the farm she was active in W.C.T.U. of Harmony township.
She was musically inclined and along about 1893-95 belonged to a ladies quartet which furnished music for social gatherings, funerals and religious services. The other members, Anna Jordan, Leo Coon and Susan B. Davis, survive.
With her husband, five children survive - A. Gerald of Cornwall, N. Y., Mrs. Leslie Bennett of Edgerton, G. Merton Sayre, N. M., Mrs. Stuart Shadel of Milton Junction and Paul at home. Two children preceded her, Vivian who died in infancy and Rolland who passed away eleven years ago. Two sisters Mrs. Luella Boss and Mrs. George Saunders of Milton survive. A sister Clara and a brother George passed away a number of years ago.

George Oliver Sayre 1868-1946

George O. Sayre, 78, well known carpenter and woodworker of Milton, died at Edgerton Memorial hospital Sunday afternoon Dec. 15. He had been a patient there since a heart attack on Nov. 11. He was born in Welton, Iowa July 20, 1868 of Moses Sayre and Mary Clement Sayre. As a child he migrated by covered wagon with his family from Farina, Ill., to North Loup, Nebr.
In 1893, he came to attend school at Milton, working his way through and hoping to prepare himself for the ministry. He was active in evangelistic quartets, one of which was composed of Prof. A. E. Whitford, the Rev. Eli Loofboro, the Rev. C. S. Sayre and himself. Through these years he was a teacher of singing schools in various communities throughout Southern Wisconsin and in Kansas. Later he studied photography and had a portable studio which he moved by horse into different localities for making pictures.
For several years he was a farmer in Harmony township and enjoyed participation in village band, men's chorus and Choral Union. He was a life-long member of S.D.B. church.
On Oct. 1, 1895, he was married to Florence a Barnhart, who passed away in Aug. 1933. Two children preceded him in death, Mary Vivian, nine days of age in 1896, and Rolland M., who died Oct. 1, 1922.
Surviving him are three sons, A. Gerald Sayre, electronic engineer of Arlington, Va., Major G. Merton Sayre of the U. S. Army Signal corps, Arlington, Va., Capt. Paul B. Sayre, pilot of United Airlines, Chicago, and two daughters, Mrs. L. J. Bennett, of Fort Atkinson, and Mrs. Stuart Shadel of Milton Junction, one brother, Bert Sayre of North Loup, Nebr., and one sister, Mrs. Jennie Hurley of Nortonville, Kan.
Services were held at the Phelps funeral home at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday and at 2 p.m. in the Milton S. D. B. church.
Pallbearers were Dr. G. E. Crosley, Dr. L. M. Babcock, George Stevens, Charles Burdick, A. H. Hurley and Prof. D. N. Inglis.
Music was furnished by Betty Daland, organist, a male quartet composed of Kenneth Babcock, Edward Rood, Irwin and Ivan Fitz Randolph. This quartet sang a hymn composed by Mr. Sayre.
