Notes for Heinrich GUTERMUTH Sr.
BIOGRAPHY: The Gutermuths (Americanized to Goodermotes) and the Jordans (Americanized to Yerden or Yerdon) set sail for the United States in 1834 . They landed in New York City and were taken to the Albany, New York area by Germans who had settled here earlier. From there, the two families went to Glass Lake and finally settled on Berlin Mountain where they established their own separate community from the people in the valley. They wrote back to Bavaria telling friends of this new country and soon others came to the US and were welcomed by the first Gutermuths and Jordans. They were a closely-knit group and married within their own German community. They made charcoal to sell. There is an entire booklet about them which may still be available from the Poestenkill Historical Society.

from an article published in a local newpaper ( i think it was the troy ny "record") feb 8, 1981..."When Heinrich and Marguerta Gutermuth came to this country in 1834, they probably didn't know what they were starting"..................Marshall Goodermote was interviewed for this article. He was the 90 year old patriarch of the clan in 1981. The article goes on to state "if numbers are any indication, then the Gutermuths starting bettering themselves right away. Heinrich and Marguerta had 10 children, six came with them to the US. Their son, Casper had 10 children and his brother, Valentin had 6 children. the rest of the clan was equally prolific..............the article also states that a Charles Goodermote did not like the name change to Goodermote and changed it back to Gutermuth and others in family followed suit, but it does not state when this was.1129
