Martha L. Babcock was born near Milton, Wis., September 15, 1862, and died near Nortonville, Kan., July 19, 1916.
She was the daughter of John and Jemima Lippincott Babcock. When she was fifteen years old the family moved to Humboldt, Neb. She was married in 1879 to Oscar S. Babcock. In 1895 they came to Nortonville. Fifteen children were born to them. Mr. Babcock and six children have died during the past years. The surviving children are Clarence R., Francis S., Philip J., Herman C., Glennie M., Iradell [Isabell], Viola M., Miles G., and Madie J.
While residing at Humboldt she became a member of the Seventh Day Baptist church of that place. Several years ago she transferred her membership to Nortonville.
Her life has been spent very largely in her home and has been devoted to the duties incident to the rearing of a large family. She will be fondly remembered by a multitude of friends who have known her.
The funeral service was conducted by Pastor James L. Skaggs at the Nortonville Seventh Day Baptist church. Burial was made in the Nortonville Cemetery. J. L. S.

Oscar Babcock was born at Jackson Centre, Ohio, March 13, 1853, and died at his home near Nortonville, Kan., Jan. 7, 1903, as a result of injuries received from a runaway team, three days before.
His father, with his family, settled at Humboldt, Nebraska, in 1857, where the subject of this sketch remained until 1895, when he, with his family, located five miles northeast from Nortonville. On July 5, 1880 [1879], he was married to Miss Martha Babcock, who, with a large family of children and a wide circle of other relatives and friends, are in bereavement. Thus, a man of strict integrity in his business relations, possessing more than ordinary physical strength and vigor, was cut down in his prime. The facts and events connected with his death were of the saddest, and his widow and family of fatherless children have the fullest sympathy of the entire community. Truly, "There is but a step between me and death." G. W. H.
