Leo Ninette (Coon) Whitford 1880-1957

Mrs. J. Fred Whitford died in the Edgerton Memorial hospital Monday afternoon, Sept. 23, following a long sickness with leukemia. The former Leo Ninette Coon was born in Utica, Wis. May 31,1880 and came to Milton to live in 1892. She was married to J. Fred Whitford Sept. 2, 1903 and they celebrated their 50th anniversary Sept. 2, 1953.
Mrs. Whitford studied piano and voice under Dr. Jairus M. Stillman in Milton College and under Dr. Wardner Williams in Chicago. She had a beautiful soprano voice and sang in many choral organizations including the Milton Choral Union and the Philharmonic Chorus of 350 voices in Buffalo, N. Y.
She has been a chorister of the church choirs in Milton, Williams Bay and DePew, Orchard Park and Bolivar, N. Y. At one time she was the supervisor of music in the Orchard Park consolidated schools. For two terms she held the position of president of the Bolivar Sorosis organization, was a member of the Bolivar and Milton Order of the Eastern Star and was vice regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Wellsville, N. Y. She served five years as the treasurer of the Women's Board of the Seventh Day Baptist denomination.
Surviving are her husband and one daughter, Captain Geraldine L. Whitford, who served as an Army nurse in the Korean War and is now supervisor of the surgical service in the Army hospital at Valley Forge, Pa. Four children died, Gladys at 16 years of age and a girl and twin boys in infancy.
Funeral services were held in the Milton Seventh Day Baptist church at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) with Pastor Elmo F. Randolph and Professor Leman H. Stringer officiating. Special music was furnished by a quartet, Mrs. Edward Rood, Miss Bernice Todd, and Professors Herbert L. Crouch and Kenneth A. Babcock with Betty Daland at the organ. Pallbearers were J. Fred's former colleagues in the college faculty - Professors W. D. Burdick, L. W. Hulett, D. N. Inglis, L. C. Shaw, L. M. Van Horn and B. H. Westlund. Interment was in Milton cemetery.

John Frederick Whitford, 87, Milton, died early Sunday morning, Dec. 5, in Mercy Hospital, Janesville, following a brief illness.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. in the Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church, Rev. Elmo Fitz Randolph officiating. Burial was in the Milton Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Stuart Shadel, Edward Ellis, Norris Rowbotham, Kenneth Smith, Leland Skaggs and Milton Van Horn.
Born Jan. 18, 1878, in Berlin, N. Y., he was the son of John and Mary Francis Summerbell Whitford. He attended Alfred University, Alfred, N. Y., transferring to Milton College and graduated in 1903 with a B. S. degree. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1907 from the University of Wisconsin.
As an educator and school administrator, he was principal at Williams Bay, 1903-1906, and at old Milton High School from 1907-1913. Following his work in Wisconsin, he served more than twenty years as an administrator in New York State School systems. From 1923 to 1930 he was professor of education and psychology at Milton College. Later he served seven years as director of public relations for the college. In 1956 Mr. Whitford was named recipient of the Pillar of Milton award by the Milton College Alumni Association.
He was married Sept. 2, 1903 to Leo Coon of Milton, who died Sept. 23, 1957. On Nov. 2, 1958 he was married to Mizpah Bennett, a teacher in Janesville schools for many years.
He was a deacon in the Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church, where he was active in the educational programs of the church. He was president of the congregation, and superintendent of its Sabbath School for several years. He had been affiliated with the I.O.O.F. Lodge and the Masonic Lodge, together with community and civic organizations.
He was an authority on the life of Abraham Lincoln and had done extensive research on his lifelong hobby, collecting many rare documents and pictures. Of the many articles written on Abraham Lincoln by Mr. Whitford, his most recent one was published on Aug. 18.
Survivors include his wife, Mizpah of Milton; a daughter, Major Geraldine L. Whitford. U. S. Army Nurse Corps, U. S. Army Hospital, Fort Huachuca, Ariz.; two brothers, William G. Whitford of Orchard Park. N. Y., and Ferris S. Whitford of Little Genesee, N. Y.
