Rachel Pettit Burkham, widow of Stephen Burkham, died at 6:30 o'clock Wednesday night in her home 1656 North Oakland Avenue in the house which had been her home for 35 years. Her death was due to heart disease of which she had been ailing for several years. The body was taken to the undetaking rooms of J. J. Moran and Sons to await the hour of the funeral.
Rachel Pettit was born April 25, 1852 in Columbus, O, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Pettit and with them came to Macon country more than 50 years ago. She came from Argenta to Decatur 45 years ago; her husband Stephen Burkham died three years ago. She leaves the following named children:
Newton Burkham of Argenta; Mrs. Claude Crandall of Chicago; Mrs. Fred Bell and Mrs. Jaunita Cochran of Los Angeles; Clarence and Burt Burkahm, Mrs. B. D. Conklin and Mrs. H. L. Roberts all of Decatur; her sister Mrs. John Tooley of Decatur; also 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was a member of United Brethren church.
