At his home in Dodge Centre, Minn., Sept. 29, 1900, John Ellis.
Mr. Ellis was born in Allegany county, New York, on July 4, 1825, and was the youngest son of Amos and Vashti Batchelor Ellis. He was married to Harriet M. Langworthy Jan. 1, 1851. Four sons and two daughters were born to them, three of whom, Eugene S., Edward L. and Giles L., are still living. Bro. Ellis moved to Dodge county in 1860, where his wife died in 1876. On March 13, 1880, he was married to Miss Ida C. Burdick, who survives him. In early life he united with the Seventh-day Baptist church and has proved a consistent and honored member through life. The home paper, in speaking of Bro. Ellis, says, "Mr. Ellis was not a man to seek public honors, but for the forty years that we have known him here, he has done his duty in the community and church, in the field and at home, as it appeared to him, and he rests from his labors." In Ashland, Dodge Co., Minn., Nov. 5th, 1879, of apoplexy, Mrs. Harriet M. Ellis, wife of John Ellis, in the 51st year of her age. Sister Ellis had been a woman of unusual activity, and found it hard to lay by the burdens of life yet, during the last few weeks, she realized that her change was near, and she was willing and waiting to go. She had already had two paralytic strokes, and was resting by the way, at the house of her son, Eugene Ellis, where, on the afternoon of Nov. 5th, the final stroke came, of which she died in the evening. In the absence of her pastor, the burial services were conducted by Dea. N. M. Burdick, and the funeral sermon was preached at the Seventh-day Baptist Church in Dodge Centre, of which she was a member, by her pastor, on Sabbath, Nov. 15th, from Rev. 21: 7: "He that overcometh shall inherit all things." At her home in Minneapolis, Minn., May 14, 1912, Mrs. Ida C. Ellis, in the sixty-second year of her age.
She was baptized by Eld. James Bailey when about sixteen years of age, and later, during a short sojourn at Milton, Wis., joined the Seventh-day Baptist church at that place.
On coming to Dodge Center in 1876, she became a member of the Seventh-day Baptist church here.
She was married March 13, 1880 to John Ellis, with whom she lived until his death in September, 1900. The last three years of her life were spent in Minneapolis.
Her kindly disposition was shown by taking a homeless girl and caring for her as if she were her own child.
Her funeral was held in the Seventh-day Baptist church at Dodge Center, conducted by her pastor, T. J. Van Horn. T. J. V.
