"Harbinson, J. H.
The Granbury Church of Christ is an old church with roots deep in Hood County. The leadership that sparked the formation of the church sprang from a preacher named Silas Scarborough who preached in Thorp Spring and Granbury in the mid-1850s. Other early religious leaders who came to Hood County were Joseph Addison Clark and his two sons, Addison and Randolph. Together these men founded Add-Ran University in Thorp Spring in 1873. According to a letter written by Randolph Clark, there was a small Church of Christ meeting in Granbury in 1873. The courthouse was the meeting place and J. H. Harbinson, who owned the livery stable, was the preacher. In 1911, a new church building was built on the corner of Travis and Pearl Streets in Granbury. That location remained the home of the Granbury Church of Christ until the early 1970s. In response to the population increases in Hood County due to the construction of the dam in 1969 that formed Lake Granbury, the present church building was erected in 1972.
Today, the Granbury Church of Christ builds on that pioneer heritage by seeking new ways to serve the spiritual needs of the community. Among the services provided for families are Christian education classes for children and a program of activities for teenagers. Through the study of the Bible in several different settings, adults are given a time and place for personal spiritual development. Each week the community service ministry helps families in this area who need a helping hand with food or other physical needs. From small groups to a large worship assembly each Sunday morning, the Granbury Church of Christ seeks to give all an opportunity to worship and serve God. "
