Anson Beriah Bliven 1842-1940 Janesville Gazette Obituary
"The Janesville Daily Gazette", Janesville, Wisconsin, Monday, Feb. 26, 1940, p 1.
Edgerton - Anson Beriah Bliven, 97, believed to be Edgerton's oldest resident, died in his home on South Main street, Sunday after a short illness. Edgerton was but a stopping place on an Indian trail when Me. Bliven came here with his parents in 1844.
He was born in Scio, Allegany county, N. Y., near New Alfred Center, Oct. 20, 1842, a son of William and Esther Bliven. He came to Wisconsin when about two years of age, his parents taking up a homestead about a mile north of Edgerton, where he resided until his marriage to Rose Collins July 3, 1886. They then moved to a neighboring farm in the town of Albion, which he had previously bought. Mr. and Mrs. Bliven lived there until moving to Edgerton in the spring of 1915. Seven children were born to this union.
Mr. Bliven was familiarly known as "Grandpa" Bliven and was admired and loved by all who knew him for his kindness and keen sense of humor. In spite of his advanced years, he took a keen interest in affairs of the city. Until a few months ago he took daily walks to the business section of the city, where he was a familiar figure.
Survivors are six children, Mrs. Gerhard Barsness, Edgerton, Mrs. Edwin Morse, Milton Junction, Mrs. Walter Day, Chicago, Harold and Wayland, both of Miami, Fla., and George Bliven, Milwaukee; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, Donald and Douglas Armstrong, Janesville. His wife died in 1927 and a daughter, Mrs. Ethel McCulloch, in 1929.
Funeral services will be held in the Henry Tellefson funeral home, 2 North Catlin street, at 3 p.m., Wednesday, an hour later than originally planned. Dr. E. M. Oliver of the Methodist church will officiate and burial will be in Fassett cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday evening.
