Elvan Herman Clarke, son of the Rev. Herman D. and Anna Jennings Clarke, was born in Verona, N. Y., Sept. 19, 1883, and died in the sanitarium at Battle Creek, Mich., July 1, after many weeks of illness. He has many relatives in Milton. He was a graduate from Milton College in 1907 with the degree of B. S. and then took a year's post graduate course at the University of Wisconsin. He received his degree of Master of Science from Milton college in 1917.
He was married to Miss Ruby Inez Tappan, Dodge Center, Minn., Sept. 3, 1907.
Mr. Clarke taught for a time in high schools at Platteville and Muscoda, then was for many years a technician and head of one of Battle Creek Sanitarium laboratories. For a number of years he had been a successful realtor in Battle Creek.
Mr. Clarke was a devoted Christian and a prominent member of the Battle Creek Seventh Day Baptist church. He leaves his wife, three children, Hubert N. Clarke, Jackson, Mich., Floy, (Mrs. Preston Wells) Detroit, both of whom attended Milton college, and Dorothea (Mrs. Alva Warnes), Durhamville, N. Y., also two sisters, Mrs. C. S. Sayre, Milton, and Mrs. Arthur Ellis, Battle Creek.
Farewell services were held July 5 in the Battle Creek S.D.B. church conducted by his pastor, the Rev. Alton Wheeler, and assisted by the Rev. Henry N. Jordan.

Mrs. Ruby Clarke, daughter of Frank E. and Flora O. Tappan, was born in Dodge Center, Minn., Jan. 15, 1884, and died in Southfield, Mich., Sept., 22, 1969.
She was baptized and joined the Dodge Center Seventh Day Baptist Church during her early years. In 1907 she was married to Elvan H. Clarke, son of the Rev. H. D. Clarke. In 1914 they moved to Battle Creek, Mich. Elvan died in 1947.
Ruby was a member of the Battle Creek Seventh Day Baptist Church, one of the diaconate for 25 years. She was a member of the Battle Creek Council of Church Women and was treasurer of the Michigan Council for several years.
On Aug. 1, 1951, Ruby was married to the Rev. Herbert L. Polan who retired at that time from the pastorate of the Verona, N. Y., Seventh Day Baptist Church. They made their home in Battle Creek until 1968.
Ruby is survived by: her husband of Livonia, Mich.; her son Hubert of Cape Coral, Fla.; two daughters, Mrs. Preston (Floy) Wells of Franklin, Mich., and Mrs. Arthur (Dorothea) Paquette of Plainfield, N. J.; her brother Ivan Tappan and sister Ruth Tappan of Battle Creek and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
