"The Milton Journal", Milton, Wisconsin, Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1896, p 1.
On Tuesday morning, Nov. 24, Mr. George W. Buten was engaged in work in his garden mulching berries. His wife, becoming anxious at his delay in coming into the house, went to the door to call him, when looking toward the garden, she saw him lying beside the wheelbarrow. She at once surmised the truth and summoned assistance, and being in feeble health, she barely reached the residence of her adopted daughter, Mrs. H. E. Miner, and a few steps distant, when she was prostrated.
When Mr. Miner reached Mr. Buten it was found that he was dead and had been in that condition for some time. Assisted by Mr. Frank Maryott, who chanced to be passing, Mr. Miner carried the body into the house and summoned a physician.
Mr. Buten's sudden death was a shock to his neighbors, who had seen him in his usual health only a few hours before.
Mr. Buten was born in Hancock, Berkshire Co., Mass., April 20, 1816, hence he was in his eighty-first year. In 1832, he found his way to Alfred, Allegany Co., N. Y., and for about three years a home in the family of Mr. Joseph Goodrich by whom he was employed.
In 1835 he went to Little Genesee, N. Y., where in 1838, he was married to Miss Phoebe Wells Green, daughter of Alpheus Miner Green. In 1840, they moved west, stopping for two months at Crystal Lake, Ill., but not finding congenial society at that place, they moved to Milton, Wis., again finding a home and Mr. Buten employment in the family of Mr. Goodrich for one year.
Having purchased a farm at Utica, Dane Co., Wis., they settled in that place, continuing to reside there about fifty years. The last few years they have had their home at Milton Junction, Wis. Mr. and Mrs. Buten had been permitted to live together a period of fifty-eight years. They were industrious and frugal in their habits and had a home of comfort and cheer. Both have been in quite poor health for several years. She will greatly miss his companionship. Mr. and Mrs. Buten never had any children but Mr. Buten's brother William has had a home with them for many years. He is the only surviving member of the family.
Mrs. H. E. Miner was adopted when a little child and Mrs. Lena Clarke, wife of Prof. Perley Clarke, had her home with them for a number of years before her marriage. Mr. Buten was a Christian of sixty years experience and his life was consistent with his profession. The funeral services were from the residence on Nov. 27. The services were conducted by pastor Geo. W. Burdick of Milton Junction.
