Robert T. Daland died on July 22, 1994, at his home in Pittsboro, N.C., from cancer.
He was born Oct. 3, 1919 in Milton, the son of John N. and Nellie Furrow Daland. He attended Milton schools and graduated from Milton College in 1942. During World War II he served with Army Intelligence. He received a master's degree in 1947 and a doctorate in political science in 1952 from the University of Wisconsin. His teaching career included years at the University of Connecticut, the University of Alabama and the University of North Carolina (1959-1985), where he was named emeritus professor.
From 1961 to 1963 he served on the Brazil faculty of the University of Southern California, also doing research at Berkeley and Columbia University. He wrote two books on the Brazilian bureaucracy. He was the first director of the master of public administration program at the University of North Carolina. He was named an "Eminent Miltonian" by Milton College.
After his retirement he was active in a number of environmental organizations. He was a charter board member of the North Carolina Coastal Federation and served as vice-president and secretary. He was the coastal coordinator of the Sierra Club and a leader in the protection of the maritime forest on Hatteras Island.
He was first married to Dorothy Shaw. He later married Edwina Bentz, who survives. He is also survived by two sons, David (Carol), Eden, N.C. and William Daland and two grandsons, Robert and Adam or Durham, N.C. and a sister, Betty Daland of Milton. A graveside service will be held in Milton at a later date.
