Death of Mrs. Eliza Phillips
Mrs. Eliza Phillips, a well known pioneer lady of Merced who was better known as Grandma Phillips, died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. E. B. Jolley, on Alameda street, early Monday morning last after a lingering illness of more than five months from cancer of the stomach, and at the advanced age of 86 years.
During her last illness she suffered much, but she bore her suffering with a Christian spirit and much fortitude.
The aged lady was respected and esteemed by all who knew her, and was a zealous member of Bethel M. E. Church. She was born in Cornwall, England, in 1812, and came to California with her husband, John Phillips, in 1852 and located at Hornitos, Mariposa county, but for the last twenty-five years has been a resident of Merced.
Her husband died in 1864. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. E.B. Jolly and Mrs. Thursa Clough, and also a step daughter, Mrs. Lucretia Young, to mourn her death.
The funeral took place from the M.E. Church on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Mr. Smith officiating.

John W. Phillips was married twice. First to Elizabeth Ashton of St. Erme, Cornwall. She died before John came to America in 1832, but he brought his
children with him to Wisconsin--Simon and Agnes Lucretia Phillips. In 1834, at Iowa county, Wisconsin, John married Eliza Trewarthe. In 1849, John W.
Phillips and his children from his first marriage came to California with his brother William, and settled at Phillips Ferry, which is near present day Merced Falls.
John Phillips returned to Wisconsin in 1851 and brought back to California in 1852, his second wife, Eliza Trewarthe Phillips, and his younger children by her: Thurza, John D., Teresa Salome and Mary Hockins Phillips.
I know that Elizabeth Trewarthe Phillips died in Merced in 1898, but I do not know where she is buried. Her husband, John W. Phillips, ran the ferry at Merced Falls until 1854 when he sold it to his son-in-law, Thorougood Young . John Phillips then bought a ranch in Hornitos in 1858, and lived there until his death on 20 Oct 1862.409
