Merle A. Hanson, 70, of 211 E. Holmes, retired Merchants and Savings Bank officer, died Sunday at Mercy Hospital after a short illness.
Mr. Hanson was employed at Merchants and Savings Bank for 41 years, starting in 1923, leaving in 1943 to work in manufacturing and real estate fields, and returning in 1959. He was elected vice president in 1961 and served in that post until his retirement in 1971.
He had served as commercial loan officer and directed M & S advertising activities prior to election as vice president.
Mr. Hanson was secretary-treasurer of Lewis Knitting Mills Co. from 1943 to 1950 and then associated with the real estate business, first as a partner in the Hanson and Mustard Real Estate Co., and later as owner of the Hanson Agency.
He was a member and long time treasurer of First Congregational United Church of Christ; a member of the YMCA board and treasurer for many years; a director of Citizens Mutual Insurance Co., and a member and former president of Janesville Country Club.
Mr. Hanson, born Feb. 27, 1906, at Avalon, was married to Elizabeth Capelle Oct. 10, 1931, and had resided in Janesville most of his life.
Surviving are his wife; two sons, Gordon M., Chicago, and Calvin C., Wauwatosa; a daughter, Mrs. Juliette Lukas, Milton; Four grandchildren; a brother, Everett H., Avalon, and a sister, Ruth Hanson, Janesville.
Memorial services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First Congregational Church with private burial services in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Friends may call from 7:00 to 8:30 tonight at Overton Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the YMCA or First Congregational Church.

Merle was a Vice-President at Merchants and Savings Bank in Janesville for many years before his death of a heart attack in July of 1976.

Mrs. Elizabeth C. Hanson, 79, of 305 S. Pontiac, Janesville, died Monday at home.
The former Elizabeth Capelle was born Nov. 22, 1906, in Janesville. She married Merle A. Hanson on Oct. 10, 1931. He died July 11, 1976. She attended Rockford College and was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ where she was active in various organizations. She was a charter member of the Janesville YWCA. She served on the board of the Rock County Chapter of the American Red Cross, was a member of Rock River Questers, Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, the Rock County and Milton historical societies, and was active in the auxiliary for the handicapped.
Surviving are two sons, Gordon of Clarendon Hills, Ill., and Calvin of Wauwatosa; a daughter Juliette Lukas of Milton, and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Congregational Church, with private burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Overton Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the church or the Janesville Visiting Nurse Association.
