Stephen Douglas will forever be remembered for a series of debates he held with Abraham Lincoln during the U.S. Senate election of 1858. When the Civil War broke out, he offered his services to President Lincoln and helped to rouse support for the Union cause. Douglas County, Illinois is named after him.
