Hiram W. Barber Jr., 83, of Westerly, Rhode Island died December 10, 1986, in Westerly after a lengthy illness.
Barber was born June 15, 1903, in Westerly and lived there all his life. He was a member of the Pawcatuck Seventh Day Baptist Church in Westerly and was an ordained deacon. He was an engineer at the former Cottrell Company in Pawcatuck, Connecticut, a manufacturer of printing presses, from 1929 until his retirement in 1968. He had a passion for detail in both his work and his faith. He maintained a great interest in the people and especially the children of his church. He was faithful to his church and the concerns of his church, even in his declining health.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine (Nichols) Barber; four sons, Denison D. Barber of Berlin, New York, Hiram W. Barber III and James H. Barber of Westerly, and John A. Barber of Agawam, Massachusetts; two sisters, Lucinda Barber and Emily Knowles of Westerly; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted on December 15, 1986, at the Schilke Funeral Home in Westerly with Pastors Dale E. Rood and Leon R. Lawton officiating. Burial was in River Bend Cemetery, Westerly.

Catherine James (Nichols) Barber, 89, of Westerly, R. I., died on July 1, 1997, at The Westerly Hospital.
She was born in South Kingstown on August 6, 1907, one of six children of Edward Howard and Grace (Dawley) Nichols. She married Hiram W. Barber Jr. on June 22, 1929, at the family farm in South Kingstown. He died on December 10, 1986.
Mrs. Barber was a 1923 graduate of South Kingstown High School. In 1934, she graduated from the Northfield (Mass.) Seminary (now Northfield-Mt. Hermon School), and in 1928 from Rhode Island State College (now the University of Rhode Island).
She and her husband lived in Westerly, and were one of the first families to settle in the Dunn's Corners area. She earned certification as a teacher, and substituted in the Westerly Public School system.
During World War II, Mrs. Barber acted as a plane spotter. She enjoyed roller skating, golf, dancing, and shuffleboard. She was also active in the Dunn's Corners Community and Home Demonstration organization.
Mrs. Barber was a member of the Pawcatuck SDB Church in Westerly since 1932, and held many positions in the church.
Survivors include four sons, Denison of Albany, N.Y., Hiram III of Westerly, James of Rochester, N. H., and John of Feeding Hills, Mass., one brother, Oliver Nichols of Portland, Conn.; 13 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. One grandson predeceased her.
Funeral services were held on July 5, 1997, in the Pawcatuck SDB Church.
