Notes from another researcher: I am researching the family of Andrew SMOTHERS (SMATHERS, SMITHERS, etc.) whose will was written 4 Sep 1824 and proved May 1827 in Bath Co. KY. He named children: Thomas, Joseph, Ann (Jackson), Martha (Fowler), Margaret (Bristo), Sally (Hopkins), and Hugh. He gave one dollar to John, Elizabeth (Fuget) and Susannah (Gipson), relationship unspecified. I am a descendant of Hugh who was in Floyd Co. KY in 1820 and later moved to Franklin and Decatur Co., IN, as did his sister and brother-in-law, Sarah "Sally" and William Hopkins (son of William Hopkins and Peace Scott). According to a Decatur Co. History, Hugh's first wife (unnamed) was the mother of his daughter Martha who married James Davis in Floyd Co. KY in 1819. His second wife was a "Miss Hopkins." I also believe that the John Smothers named in the will was the same John Smothers who received a Revolutionary War pension in Morgan Co. KY (formed from Floyd). He was a resident of Rockingham Co. VA at the time of his enlistment. Andrew Smothers and his wife Sarah bought and sold land in Washington Co., VA in 1793 where his son Thomas m. Rebecca John in 1799. I have been in contact with descendants of Thomas who apparently took the spelling "Smithers." Andrew's wife at the time of his will was named Elizabeth. I am seeking information about all these individuals and have additional information to share. Patricia Roane Straube [email protected] Children of WILLIAM HOPKINS and PEACE SCOTT are:

34. FRANCIS26 HOPKINS, JR. was born 1754 in Rhode Island, and died 25 Jul 1823 in , Bathe, Kentucky. He married ANN UNKNOWN. Notes for FRANCIS HOPKINS, JR.: Taken from "History of Southwest Virginia", 1746-1798, Washington county 1777-1870, pages 275-2777. By Lewis Preston Summers, Published in Baltimore in 1966 by the Genealogical Publishing Company. Found Genealogical Forum Library-Portland, Oregon Jan 2997 In 1779, in Virginia all bank notes of the whole emissions of 20 May 1777 and 11 Apr 1778 were taken out of circulation since counterfeits had been issued by "our enemies of New York and found to be spreading, etc." In Washington county, Virginia 4 May 1778 (Annals of Southwest Virginia, 1768-1800, part 2 Lewis Preston Summer) FRANCIS HOPKINS was held on suspicion of his feloniously counterfeiting or erasing, altering sundry Treasury Notes...knowing same to be bad...He said he was in no was quality...but it is opinion of the Court that the said Francis Hopkins was guilty of passing Treasury Notes knowing the same to be bad.... On 19 May 1778 the Grand Jury returned to the Bar and presented as followeth 'viz Francis Hopkins for knowingly passing two bad ten dollar bills and buying bad money at an under rate. 19 May 1778-Ordered that Francis Hopkins be fined 50 pounds lawful money of Virginia and 6 months imprisonment for passing counterfeit money, 20 Aug 1778--- Ordered that Francis Hopkins be imprisoned within the walls of Forest at William Cock's old Place on Renfroes' Creek alias Spring Creek until the County Gaol is completed except on some extraordinary emergency and then only by the permission of a magistrate if there is one within 5 miles of said Fort. His securities were Zachariah Wolsey Frathia Wall, William Hopkins, and George Wolsey 22 Apr 1779---Estate of William Hopkins who had been taken and committed to Gaol o this county for Treasonable practices against this State....had broken Gaol and escaped...be sold and money deposited in Treasury...appearing he has no family and no stated place of abode. 22 Mar 1780---Escheator Indenture of Estate of William Hopkins 18 Sep 1782---Joseph Cole was security for the good behavior of Williams Hopkins. 20 May 1783---William Hopkins forfeited above bond for stealing a horse. Now this is all that actually occurred in the County records, but 100years later Draper started checking incidents of historical interest and according to his report, Francis Hopkins was hanged by William Campbell and a Negro, Thomas about 1779. Is was said he was a Tory and many other things...but from a very careful study, the conclusion is that the occurrence was occasioned by the fact that the Scotch-Irish were unhappy with the people who migrated down from Connecticut, New Jersey and New York...even in Draper's account, it appeared that Campbell chased Francis Hopkins and hanged him, only because he was told that he was a trouble-maker..... Children of FRANCIS HOPKINS and ANN UNKNOWN are:

Notes for ISABELLA HADDON HOPKINS: From the book "Sketches from Hopkins County History" by Celia M. Wright ISABELLA HOPKINS - PIONEER OF DESTINY We shall presently return to the direct events in Hopkins County, but we must first retrace our steps into the background of the common history of Northeast Texas. Perhaps we shall devote too much attention to this phase, but as we see it, this is very important in the understanding of later history. The "human angle" events of the earliest period history have for the most part escaped recording. As we brush the dust of a century and a half from the scroll of history, we see emerging from hundreds of other heroic women, one most amazing woman, destined to leave her imprint on Texas forever. She was Isabella Hopkins, familiarly called "Aunt Ibby" by her many relations. We shall sketch her story here and show how she was related to events and places. We are indebted for some of the information about her to the small book written by one of her sons, Pat Benjamin Clark, North Texas One Hundred Years A go, copyrighted by the family of Simeon E. Clark in 1947, and used by permission here. Likewise, our information comes from personal interviews and telephone conversations and letters with numerous of her descendants, or descendants of near kin to Isabella. (See Bibliography.) A chief personage who has stirred my imagination about her is a granddaughter of David Hopkins, a cousin of Isabella's, who was named for her. She is Mrs. Bonnie Belle Connor Harris, who was born east of Sulphur Bluff on August 22, 1872, the daughter of Joseph Wright Connor (Conner), and Susan Elizabeth Hopkins. Miss Hopkins was the daughter of David and Annie Hargrave Hopkins. Miss Hargrave was the daughter of Old James Hargrave, one of the first four Hargrave brothers to settle in what is now Hopkins County. The Hargrave family made the first settlements in the county, and were of equal importance with the Hopkins families, and for that matter with a number of other "first families." Because of their original parts in the settlement of the county, however, the Hopkinses and the Hargraves are pre-emiment. Many Threads Trace to Isabella Many are the threads tracing back to Isabella. No one knows how many babies were named after her. Not only do descendants today bear her name, but towns and counties retain her influence. Her portrait emerges as you consider the period in which she lived. The United States had just purchased the Louisiana Territory in 1803 from France. A certain Richard Francis (Frank) Hopkins, born in Virginia in 1779, had moved to Kentucky shortly after Daniel Boone settled there, and a few years later Hopkins moved across the Ohio River into Indiana http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/ GORDON, ISABELLA HADDON HOPKINS (1805-1895). Isabella Gordon, pioneer northeast Texas settler and promoter of Clarksville, the fifth of eight children of Francis and Catherine (Elliott) Hopkins, was born Mount Sterling, Kentucky, on August 10, 1805. Her father was a wealthy Kentucky planter who moved the family to Gibson County, Indiana, in 1811 but returned to Kentucky after the death of his wife. He then moved the family to Texas in December 1823. He intended to join Stephen F. Austin'sqv colony but settled instead at the mouth of Mill Creek on Red River in what is now Bowie County. On April 18, 1824, Isabella married John Hanks, a native of Kentucky, who had preceded the Hopkins family to the Red River area. John and Isabella Hanks made their home on the north side of Red River near the site of present Idabel, Oklahoma, but later moved to the south side of the river after the United States government forced the removal of settlers following the 1820 and 1825 Choctaw treaties. John Hanks died on October 8, 1827. One surviving child, Minerva Ann, was born to this marriage. On July 15, 1829, Isabella married James Clark, a salt manufacturer, India trader, and public servant. James and Isabella Clark lived in what is now Sevier County, Arkansas, before moving in 1831 to Jonesboro on the Red River, in the area that later became Red River County, Texas. At that time Jonesboro was claimed by Mexico and Arkansas Territory. On December 31, 1830, the Clarks registered for a Mexican land title as colonists in Arthur Wavell'sqv colony, but titles were never issued. In December 1832 Sam Houstonqv passed his first night and took his first meal on Texas soil at the Clark home. In 1834 the Clarks moved to Sulphur Fork Prairie, twenty-five miles south of Jonesboro, where they founded a settlement that later became known as Clarksville, the present seat of Red River County. During the Texas Revolution James Clark and the second of Isabella's brothers served in the Texas army. She reputedly outfitted a company of volunteers at her own expense. Isabella and her neighbors, Jane and Betsy Latimer, intercepted David Crockett after he crossed Red River on his way to Nacogdoches and San Antonio and helped guide him through the Red River country. James Clark died on May 2, 1838. He and Isabella had five children. In July 1838 Isabella acquired ownership of Henry Stout's headright claim, which included the site of Clarksville. She then began donating town lots to settlers, merchants, and churches to promote development. She soon became a leading political, financial, and social leader in the community. On June 10, 1839, she married Dr. George Gordon, a Clarksville physician. George and Isabella Gordon had four children. During the Civil War Isabella was an ardent supporter of the Confederate cause. She sent her husband and three of her sons into the Confederate army. Their oldest son, John Gordon, died from sickness in 1862 while serving as a Confederate army private. Isabella was not affiliated with any organized religion until 1864, when she became Catholic. After Dr. Gordon's death in December 1872, she maintained her interest in politics and Clarksville. Popularly known as "Aunt Ibbie," Isabella Gordon became a widely respected eyewitness of the early history of Northeast Texas. Her biography and reminiscences appeared in several contemporary publications, including the Biographical Souvenir of the State of Texas (1889), John Henry Brown's Indians and Pioneers of Texas (published in the 1890s), and Elizabeth Brook's Prominent Women of Texas (1896). On January 6, 1894, the Dallas Morning News published her life story in a feature article. She died on May 31, 1895, and was buried in the Catholic Cemetery at Clarksville. Jeffrey D. All have the same birth place.) Stories handed down are: His parents died and he was raised by two unknown maiden aunts. He ran away at the age of 15 and nothing else is heard of him until he married Matilda Eveline Hiatt. After Mitilda's death George married Nancy Abernathy. Sup.#6 EN.Dist.60 Sht.3B Family Histories- a book in NE Library Allen-Loy Family by Bernice Allen Loy George William Allen married Nancy Jane Hopkins. To this union was born seven children: Alfred, Lewis, Walter, Oliver, Richard, Charlotte, and Fannie. The family of George and Nancy was raised and educated in the Berwyn vicinity. George was a farmer. George and Nancy lived on a tree claim in Custer County. After George's death Nancy and her mother Francis lived on the tree claim until 1909. In the records of Walnut Twp, Madison County, Iowa, George W. Allen bought 120 acres for $100. He paid cash for it in 1872, later lost it to creditors who sued to recover their money. This is on record at Winterset Court House. Martha Allen was born in Iowa, but soon after George and Nancy left Iowa , where he had been farming with Nancy's father James Hopkins, soon after she was born. They went to Lancaster County NE where Guye James Allen was born. NOTES: Story as told to Mable Allen by Ethel (Hopkins) Spenser, the daughter of May Belle (Allen) Hopkins, goes like this: May Belle had a sister that died when she started menstruation. She had tried to wash herself in a creek in cold weather, that caused complications and she died. A few days later. So this could account for Sarah's disappearance, the age would be right. When the Allen family left Lancaster Co., NE they went to Butler Co., NE. Alfred Eldridge Allen was born 08-25-1882. George Washington Allen had moved to Custer County and on 07-23-1882 he took out a homestead claim. Nancy must have stayed in Butler County because Alfred was born there a month later. In November of 1884, Lewis Christfer was born in Custer County. The first homestead claim George W. Allen filled out, March 2, 1889 on section W1/2, NW1/4, section 32-12-6, which he did not perfect title to because of grasshoppers. The one he filed in 1890, according to Custer County records was W1/2, NW1/4,and N1/2, SW1/4, section 24-16N-19W-160 acres, which he owned until he died. It also said in the homestead papers that he and his family were away from the homestead for several months after their crops burned out. They went to Enid, Oklahoma to work in the harvest. Nancy's brothers had settled in that area. Her brothers were involved in the big race to claim land when the Oklahoma Territory opened up. Fannie Okly Allen was born in Enid, Oklahoma, she was George and Nancy's eleventh child. George Washington Allen died 01-20-1907 at the age of 71 years in Berwyn, Custer County, NE.
