Mason was first Overseer on The Thomas Delorum Cole Plantation. He next owned a hotel in Elba, Alabama, then they lived on a plantation near Elba, Alabama in Sand Hill Community. After leaving the Cole Plantation he also became sheriff of Coffee county. Shortly after the Civil war started he organized Captain Kimmey's Volunteers company A, 33rd Alabama Regiment. He joined the Confederate Army on 11 March 1862. He was wounded in Perryville, KY on 8 Oct 1862. At the time he was leading his men saying "I will not ask you to go where I do not lead." he was invalided at home for a period, being wounded in the hip. After a short stay at home he returned to the front and took command of his Company. It has also been reported that he was injured in a battle at Kent. His name appears on a receipt given by the Confederate Agent for exchange of prisoners of war received near Vicksburg, Mississippi, 15 Nov 1862. He was also sent by Gen. Bragg on recruiting and Quarter Master expeditions.
