We first moved into a house on Elliot Street. We became close friends
with Johnny and Shirley Higgins. We lived on Elliot for about four
months when we bought a house trailer. We had it parked at DeWitt
Trailer Park, 3515 French Ave., Sanford.

While at NAS Sanford, FL, I went to school on semi-automatic checkout
equipment to support the A3J-1 bomber aircraft. Worked on radar
altimeters, communications, navigation and identification electronics
equipment. In February of 1964 was transferred to RVAH-5, "Savage
Sons of Sanford", at NAS Sanford. We were the first squadron to
operate the Navy's first reconnaissance aircraft RA5C. It was an
upgraded version of the A3J. Made cruise on the USS Ranger in August
1964. Was heavily involved in the Viet-Nam conflict. Returned home
in May 1965. Departed again aboard USS America (ship's first cruise)
in October 1965.

In December 1966 I was transferred to the training squadron, RVAH-3,
at NAS Sanford. By this time I had been promoted to Petty Officer
First Class (AT1).
Made a three week carrier qualification (training for pilots) cruise
to Hawaii while in the squadron. Was promoted to Chief Petty Officer
(E7) in November 1967.

Transferred to Attack Squadron (VA-174) at NAS Cecil Field, FL. This
was another training squadron. We operated A7 aircraft. Worked in
Maintenance Control on mid-night shift. Was very good in this job.
Was selected for promotion to Warrant Officer (W-1) in 1970.

Transferred to Reconnaissance Attack Squadron (RVAH-9), "Hoot Owls",
deployed aboard USS Saratoga in the Mediterranean Sea. Spent two
weeks chasing the ship. Finally got aboard in Yugoslavia. Squadron
was home based at NAS Albany, GA. While in Albany I drove back and
forth to Sanford on week-ends. One way mileage was 342 miles. Took
about 6 1/2 hours to make trip.

On January 24, 1971 at Elder Springs Baptist Church, Sanford, FL I
accepted Jesus Christ as my personal saviour. Robert J. (Pappy)
Boynton dealt with me. Did not know what true joy and living was
until then. Not only was I better prepared to live but ready to die.

teacher. Elder Springs was a small church with a Sunday school
enrollment of 125. Parents: George Rufus FLEET and Mary Jewell BLACK.

He had Social Security Number 409-18-6973. When Jackie and I were very young we begged Daddy to let us smoke. He
gave each of us a cigar. After a couple of puffs I became sick as a
dog. It didn't bother Jackie at all.

Served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. Was stationed in the
Pacific.
(I, George Barry, wore his thirteen button Navy blue trousers after I
had completed boot camp and other service schools. Wore the seat out
of them.)

Daddy loved to read and probably read every Zane Grey novel that was
written.

I remember he made a bow for me out of lemon wood. I was real proud
of it. Think it ended up broken. Believe that was the only thing he
gave me that he had made himself.

At Christmas time we would place some of Mom's stockings on door knobs
or bed posts. Daddy would say he was going to fool Santa Claus and
cut the toe out of his stocking. He would place a pail under the
stocking. Sure enough, on Christmas morning he would have a pail full
of 'goodies'. One year I tried his trick and when I woke up he had
tied a knot in the stocking. I received less than before. Didn't try
it any more. Daddy did it yearly and would tell us we were not smart
enough to fool Santa.

Daddy and I seemed to grow closer and enjoy each other's company after
I joined the Navy. Believe part ofit was because I was following in
his footsteps but the main reason was I was growing up.
