AN INDIAN MISSIONARY THE LATE MR C. A. PATERSON Mr Charles Alfred Paterson, LL.B., formerly Principal of the Church of Scotland Mission College in Madras, and Registrar of Madras University, died in an Edinburgh nursing home yesterday. Mr Paterson was trained as an advocate, but he early forsook the Bar for missionary work. A son of the late Dr James Paterson, M.D., he was born in Glasgow in 1857. In Glasgow High School, and later in the University of that city, he had a brilliant career, taking the degrees of M.A. an LL.B. He was called to the Scottish Bar in 1878. Two years later he went to India as a missionary. His first post was at Bombay; from there he was transferred to Lahore; and finally he was appointed Principal of the Church of Scotland Mission College in Madras, a post from which he resigned in 1902. After severing his connection with the College he was appointed Registrar of Madras University, and he held that post until 1907, when he retired. Mr Paterson took a keen and active interest in India's education problems. He had gained a thorough knowledge of these, and was able, while in Madras, to do much to advance the cause of education. On returning home Mr Paterson resided first in Dollar, and later in London, while three years ago he came to Edinburgh. He is survived by a widow and family. |
