His early jobs included: Jackerooing at the Boomerang Station near Maryborough in the Gayndah district, and managing Apis Creek cattle station.
In 1865 William began operating as a teamster between Rockhampton and the Peak Downs copper fields. (Alternatively: he ended up with a bullock team ferrying goods from Cooktown to the Palmer and from Rockhampton to the goldfields near there.)
In 1875 he returned to Scotland aboard the Lord Warden and came back to Queensland on the Fremantle in 1876.
"Despite the town's (Gladstone) reputation for healthiness, Mayor Jason Boles chaired a meeting on 19 January 1887 to consider a hospital. A large and enthusiatic committee was formed and by the following year sufficient money was in hand ($600) to build on the selected site in 1889. Total government expenditure 1889-1890 was $10038. The minutes provide no record of the opening, but presumably this was 1 March 1890. On that day Mr and Mrs (William and Edith) Paterson commenced duties as wardsman and matron."
Kathleen Lilias Paterson told the following about her father William:
1. William's wife was a lot younger. Edith was a religious person taking all the children to church every Sunday. William stayed at home believing that the Salvation Army would look after him. While Edith and the children were at church William took advantage of the time to allow the dog and joey into the house.
2.When William had deliveries to make to Callopie, west of Gladstone, his sons Charles and Fred were sent along to look after him. William used to open the beer supply on the way and by the time they were returning to Gladstone William was quite under the weather. Charles used to say. "Toss the grog out Fred", but Charles was the one tossed out of the dray to walk home past the cemetery, which in those days was way out in the bush.
PATERSON STREET in Gladstone was named after the Paterson Family of W H Paterson.2,6
