After his son James was born (in 1808 or 9), he was appointed as Hospital Assistant (in the Army) on 7 June 1810. [This date fits with 4 years of study (1806-7, 1807-8, 1808-9, 1809-10) but his graduation seems to be not until 1818, perhaps after serving an apprenticeship?] He participated in the Iberian Peninsular War from Sep 1810 to Dec 1811 with the 45th Regiment of Foot, being appointed Assistant Surgeon on 22nd Aug 1811. He was part of the Madras army in 1819 serving in the 45th Regiment, spending 6 years in Ceylon. Between 1819 and 1820 he applied for Furlough (extended leave). In 1824 he was Assistant Surgeon in the 45th Regiment of Foot. The 45th took part in the Burmese War of 1824-5. James served in Burma in 1826. He was first commissioned into the 42nd Highlanders (Black Watch) on:25/5/1826 In 1829 & 1832 he was serving with the 13th Light Infantry in India. He was commissioned again into the 42nd Highlanders (Black Watch) on:19/6/1835 The locations the Black Watch regiment went to were: Jun 1836 Edinburgh Jun 1837 Glasgow Apr 1838 Dublin Apr 1839 Limerick Mar 1840 Templemore (Co. Tipperary) He retired from the army on 26/2/1841. |
