Carl Friedrich August Fuhrmann

Carl Friedrich August Fuhrmann

CARL FRIEDRICH AUGUST FUHRMANN, son of Theodor Fuhrmann and Caroline Kopelke, was born 7 Mar 1860 in Sparsee, Pomerania. He was baptized there (as Carl Friedrich August Kopelke) on 25 Mar 1860. His godparents were Philip Galesko of Neustettin, who was soon to be his uncle (being the fianc of his mother Caroline's sister Henriette); Carl Kopelke of Sparsee, his grandfather; and Henriette Kopelke, his aunt. Although he was born before his parents' marriage, his father Theodor specified at the time of his marriage to Caroline Kopelke that Carl was his child. Carl then took the name Fuhrmann.

He died 14 Dec 1953 in Marshall, MN, and was buried in the cemetery at Florence, MN.

He was married 5 May 1892 in Hinton, IA to MARIE CAROLINE WILHELMINE RDIGER, who was born 6 Apr 1868 in Kslin, Pomerania, daughter of Johann Friedrich August Rdiger and Friederike Kaapke. She died 15 Mar 1945 in Marshall, MN.

Carl was the first of this family to emigrate to America. He set sail on the Hamburg-American liner "Bohemia" from the port of Hamburg on 8 Apr 1888. On the Hamburg passenger list he is described as an "arbeiter" (worker), age 28, of Gross Dallenthin, Pomerania. The Bohemia arrived in New York harbor on 12 May 1888, having stopped en route in Havre, France. A scattering of the passengers were Danish, Austrian, etc., but the majority were from Prussia and Russia.

On the New York passenger list of arrivals, Carl is described as a workman, and his destination is given as Illinois. One other couple on the ship was from the same parish (Persanzig): Carl Gall, farmer, age 27, and his wife Johanna, age 28. They are listed as from Klein Dallenthin, and their destination is given as New York.

By 1892, the year of his marriage to Marie Rdiger, Carl was living in Plymouth County, IA. It is likely that the Galls travelled with him, since the records of the baptisms of Carl and Marie's children in Plymouth County show Carl Gall one of the godparents of Edward and Mrs. Gall one of the godparents of Elsie.

Marie Rdiger came to America with Carl's parents in 1892. She was accompanied by her and Carl's son George Carl Franz Rdiger (later Fuhrmann). Her last address is given on the New York passenger list as Gross Dallenthin, Pomerania, which may imply that she had been living with the Fuhrmanns while waiting to join Carl in America.

Carl and Marie were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lincoln Township, Plymouth County, Iowa on 5 May 1892. This record shows the groom's parents as Theodor Fuhrmann and Caroline Kapelke. The bride's parents are listed as August Rdiger and Fredrika Kappke. Heinrich Fuhrmann and Emma Beck were the witnesses, and the marriage was performed by George Hartman, the Pastor.

Carl became an American citizen 15 Oct 1896 and at the time of the 1900 census was farming land he rented in Lincoln Township. In 1916 he moved with his family to a farm in the vicinity of Florence, Minnesota. In 1931 he retired to Florence, then three years later he and Marie moved to Marshall, MN, where they spent their last years in the home of their daughter Elsie, the wife of Alvin Green. They are buried in the Florence Cemetery.
