Gottlieb Pöppel

Gottlieb Pöppel

GOTTLIEB PÖPPEL, who was born about 1740, and died at Sparsee, 8 Mar 1798, was the probable father of the group of individuals of this name who lived in and around Sparsee. They are likely to have been siblings in that they were godparents to one another's children, and were born over a period of roughly 20 years, a reasonable period of time for the children of a couple to be born.

When he died at Sparsee, 8 Mar 1798, age 58, Gottlieb was described as being a freimann and kolonist in Gönne.

He was probably married to ELEONORE SOPHIE KOPISKE, who was born circa 1740, and died at Sparsee, 26 Feb 1829, age 89. She was described at that time as Eleonore Sophie Pöppel geb. Kopiske, a widow with surviving children (number not specified). Since there were no other Pöppels in the area, she was very likely the widow of Gottlieb, and therefore the mother of the children in this family.

Children of Gottlieb Pöppel and Eleonore Sophie Kopiske:

1. CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH PÖPPEL, m. by 1803, MARIA ELISABETH KLABUNDE, who was born about 1769, and died at Sparsee, 30 Apr 1834, age 65.

In 1803, at the baptism of his first son, Christian was described as a Hussar in the Golscken Regiment. Thereafter, he was called an einwohner or a Kolonist in Gönne. In 1830, he was called an einwohner of Espenwerder. On 8 Jul 1796, Gottlieb Jahnke, Christian Friedrich Pöppel and Maria Elisabeth Clawunde were the three godparents for Gottlieb Friedrich Gaulcke, son of Daniel and Barbara Charlotte (Jahnke) Gaulcke. Daniel was a freimann and einwohner of Sparsee at the time. Since couples often appeared as godparents of children shortly before their marriage, it seems likely that Christian and Maria Elisabeth were married soon after this baptism. There is evidently some connection with this Jahnke family, since Gottlieb Janske (probably identical to the above third godparent) was godfather to their first son in 1803. In 1812, Christian was a godfather to the son of Jacob and Maria Charlotte (Lemke) Reupke. Jacob was a schneidermeier in Gönne at that time.

Dorothea Elisabeth Pöppel, who was born about 1798 and married Martin Groth in 1819, was probably a daughter of this couple, since she was too young to be a child of Gottlieb, and too old to be a daughter of any of the other Pöppels in this family. Only Christian Friedrich's marriage does not appear in these records -- he was evidently married before coming to this area.

He was generally called Christian Pöppel. She was called Maria Elisabeth. The name Klawunde was a frequent alternative for Klabunde, both forms appearing in records of this period (sometimes spelled with a C, as Clawunde). In later years, the usual form was Klabunde.

2. CHRISTOPH WILHELM PÖPPEL was born 19 May 1775, according to his age at death (1773 according to his age at marriage), and died at Sparsee, 28 Jan 1842. He was described at the time of his death as age 66 years, 8 months, 9 days, survived by one daughter. He was a kolonist in Gönne at the time of his marriage.

He married at Sparsee, 28 Jun 1803, DOROTHEA ELEONORE KLABUNDE of Gönne. At the time of their marriage, he was 30 and she was 26. The name Klabunde is variously spelled at different times -- often, especially in the earlier years, it was Klawunde. She died at Sparsee, 3 Jul 1834, age 59. She was thus probably born between 1775 and 1777.

He was generally called Wilhelm Pöppel; she was sometimes called Dorothea and sometimes Eleonore.

3. DANIEL ERDMANN PÖPPEL was born about September 1777. He died at Sparsee, 23 Mar 1840, age 62 years, 6 months, leaving a widow and 5 children.

He married at Sparsee, 13 Mar 1807, CHRISTINE CHARLOTTE BORN, who was born about 1777. Their ages at marriage were 32 and 30, respectively. He was described as a freimann and an einwohner of Sparsee at the time of the marriage.

He was generally called Daniel Pöppel; she was called Charlotte.

4. ELEONORE LOUISE PÖPPEL was born 26 Apr 1780 (by subtraction of her age at death). She died a widow at Sparsee, 10 Sep 1857, age 77 years, 4 months, 14 days, leaving 5 adult children.

She married at Sparsee, 28 Nov 1800, MICHAEL GOTTLIEB KLABUNDE, a freimann and einlieger of Gönne, age 29. He died at Sparsee, 7 Apr 1835, age 68 1/2, a büdner. He was also called a kolonist in Gönne. She was of Gönne at the time of their marriage.

He was generally called Gottlieb Klabunde, she was usually Louise. The name Klabunde, as mentioned earlier, was often spelled Klawunde, especially in the earlier years of this period.

5. DOROTHEE JULIANE CAROLINE PÖPPEL, b. 24 May 1786; d. 21 Aug 1848; m. 15 Nov 1811, CHRISTIAN GOTTLIEB MATTIK.
