John Middleton

John Middleton

JOHN MIDDLETON of Haugham, Lincs. married at Alford, Lincs., 9 Oct 1780, ANN BRUMPTON (which name is sometimes rendered as Brampton or Brompton), who was baptized at Alford 13 Mar 1761, daughter of William Brumpton and Jane Frankiss.

The marriage license, (page 51 of the 1780 marriage licenses in Lincolnshire, numbered 396.397), described him as John Middleton of Haugham, servant, 27. She was described as Ann Brampton of Alford, 19. Security for the marriage was William Brampton of Alford, cordwainer. Witness was Frances Moody. The license was for a marriage to be held in Alford, and was dated 8 Oct 1780.

He was probably the John Middleton, frameworkknitter, who later lived in Apple Row in Nottingham. If so, he was buried at St. Mary's, Nottingham, 1 Nov 1818, age 66.

One possibility for the parents of John Middleton: Francis and Mary Middleton, who had a son John baptized at South Willingham, Lincs., in 1752. The age agrees very well with his marriage license and his age at death. South Willingham is only about 10 miles from Haugham, Lincs.

The identification of the Jane Middleton who married Timothy Briggs in Nottingham as a daughter of this couple is based on the following:

Jane (Middleton) Briggs was not born in Nottinghamshire, according to the 1841 census.

Her age was about right.

There was a burial recorded 1 Nov 1818, at St. Mary's, Nottingham, for a John Middleton, age 66, from Apple Row in Nottingham (which is where Timothy and Jane were living at the time). This age agrees very well with the age given on the marriage license of John and Ann (Brumpton) Middleton.

Samuel and Elizabeth (Middleton) Taylor appear to have moved to Nottingham and lived in the same street as Timothy and Jane Briggs.

All other possibilities in neighboring counties have (so far) proved unlikely.

Thus, while this identification is not certain, it accords very well with all circumstantial evidence so far found.

Children of John Middleton and Ann Brumpton:

1. JANE MIDDLETON, bapt. at Alford, Lincolnshire, 4 Mar 1781; d. at Sneinton, Notts., 5 Aug 1843, age 61; m. at St. Mary's, Nottingham, 11 Mar 1798, TIMOTHY BRIGGS, who was baptized at St. Mary's, Nottingham, 23 Jun 1778, son of Timothy Briggs and Sarah Kettleband; he died after 1851.

2. ELIZABETH MIDDLETON, bapt. at Alford, Lincs., 23 May 1783; m. at Alford, Lincs., 20 Oct 1800, SAMUEL TAYLOR. Samuel and Elizabeth had children baptized at Alford from 1805 to 1821. In 1823, a child (John Taylor) was baptized at St. Mary's, Nottingham, to a Samuel and Elizabeth Taylor. While it is not certain that the Samuel and Elizabeth Taylor of Nottingham are the same couple that lived in Alford, their disappearance from Alford records after 1821 and the fact that their names do not appear in Nottingham before 1823 certainly support it. It is of interest that they also lived in the same street as Timothy and Jane Briggs. The baptism of John in 1823 gives the residence of the father as Coalpit Lane (where Timothy and Jane Briggs were living at the time of the 1841 census). Samuel's occupation is given on this baptism as FWK (frameworkknitter). There is a second baptism of a John Taylor, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Taylor, at St. Mary's in 1826. This baptism gives the father's occupation as soldier in the 10 Hussars, and his residence as the barracks. This may or may not be the same Samuel Taylor of 1823.

3. MARY MIDDLETON, bapt. at Alford, Lincs., in Oct 1784.

4. SARAH MIDDLETON, bapt. at Alford, Lincs., 7 Jul 1786.

5. WILLIAM MIDDLETON, bapt. at Alford, Lincs., 26 Sep 1788.

6. ANN MIDDLETON, bapt. at Alford, Lincs., 21 Sep 1790.

7. REBECCA MIDDLETON, bapt. at Alford, Lincs., 25 Aug 1793.
