Maria Anna Caspari

Maria Anna Caspari

MARIA ANNA CASPARI, daughter of Matthias Caspari and Anna Maria Kayser, was born 4 Oct 1756 and baptized at Zell, Rheinland, 5 Oct 1756. She died at her home in Ediger, Rheinland, 23 July 1811.

She married at Marienburg in the parish of Zell, 19 Oct 1776, JOHANN CHRISTOPH LAUXEN, who was baptized at Ediger, 23 ___ 1753, son of Philipp Jacob Lauxen and Anna Catharina Serve. He died at Ediger 7 Oct 1789. The marriage was witnessed by Gisbert Geller and Matthias Joseph Caspari, brother-in-law and brother of the bride, respectively.

At the time of their son Friderich's marriage (when the Rheinland was under French rule), Johann Christoph Lauxen's occupation was given as "particulier," or private individual (perhaps meaning self-employed or of independent means), as is the occupation of Friderich. In 1808, at the second marriage of their daughter Maria Anna, the daughter is referred to as "la Dame Marie Anne ne Lauxen." Her uncle is referred to as "le Sieur Nicolas Gaspari." Although it is difficult to assess the significance of the use of these honorifics after the period of the Republic, not everyone is referred to by these titles at this time (not even in this document), and it would appear that these two are considered to have high status in the community.

Maria Anna (Caspari) Lauxen's death occurred while Ediger was part of France, and her death record, in French, is sufficiently informative to be worth translating here in full:

July 23, 1811, before us, the official mayor of the Civil State of the Commune of Ediger, canton of Cochem, Departement of Rhin et Moselle, appeared Frideric Lauxen, age 27 years, proprietor, residing at Ediger, son of the deceased, and Gaspard Friderichs, age 27 years, proprietor, of Eller. They have declared that Marie Anne ne Casparii, widow and relict of the late Christoph Lauxen of Ediger, and daughter of Mathias Caspari and of Anne Marie Kaysers, during their lifetime married at Zell, died today in her home at Ediger, aged 55 years; (these witnesses) have signed the present act after it was read to them. -- Friderichs, Friderich Lauxen, Friderichs.

At this time, the mayor of Ediger was also named Gaspard Friderichs (possibly the father of the witness). Evidently the Friderichs family did not consider it necessary to use their Christian names when signing a document.
