Thomas Cliff

 

THOMAS CLIFF, son of William Cliff of Widmerpool, was buried at Widmerpool, 5 Feb 1582/3.

He married, by 1546, MARGARET ___, who survived him.

He left a will, dated 18 Jan 1582/3 and proved 27 Jul 1583, as follows:

In the name of god amen; the xviii daye of Januarie in the yeare of our lord god one thousand fyve hundrethe eyghtie and two, and in the xxv yeare of the reigne of our soveraine ladie Elizabethe by the grace of god quene of England ffrance and Ireland, defender of the faith, etc.

I Thomas Clyffe of Wydmarpolle beinge of good and perfect remembrance, laud and prayse be geven to almyghtie god, but sicke in bodie, do ordeyne and dispose this my last will and testament in manner and forme followinge, that is to saye,

ffirst and principallie I remitte my soule into thands of almyghtie god my maker, and his sone Jesus Christ my redemer, ffaithfullie belevinge throughe the merite of his most Bytter deathe and passion my synes be clearlie forgeven, besechinge the holie trenitie that I maye aryse in that Joyefull tyme and comynge of my Saviour with the elect and chosen to eternall salvacon and blesse

And my bodie to be buried in the churche yeard in Wydmerpoole.

Imprimis I give and leave unto my wyf Margaret Clyf all the intreste right and tytle of all the goodes and cattalles which I have at the daye of my deathe, and the said Margaret Clyffe to have the disposicon of all the said goodes, and cattalles at her will and pleasur, whome I make my sole executrix of this my last will and testament and of the execution of the same

I make and ordeyne my especial frendes Willm Wydmerpoole, gentleman, and Richard Marcer supervisoures and overseers of the same.

Thes beinge witnesses: Edmond Higginbothome minister, James Lowe, Willm Widmerpolle, gentleman.

1. MODWINE CLIFF, bapt. at Widmerpool, Notts., 24 Nov 1546; m. at Widmerpool, 23 Nov 1577, ROBERT TROMAN.

2. HENRY CLIFF, bapt. at Widmerpool, Notts., 21 Jul 1548; evidently d. before 1551.

+3. HENRY CLIFF, bapt. at Widmerpool, Notts., 6 Mar 1551; bur. at Widmerpool, 19 Sep 1613; m. at Widmerpool, 30 Jul 1580, ANNE BACON, who was bapt. at Widmerpool, 14 Feb 1551/2 and buried there 16 Jun 1599.

4. ROBERT CLIFF, bapt. at Widmerpool, Notts., 13 Sep 1554; m. at Widmerpool, 18 Jun 1593, JOHAN FELSTED [this marriage may refer to his cousin, Robert, son of Peter, see William Cliff family].

5. JOHN CLIFF, bapt. at Widmerpool, Notts., 26 Feb 1556/7; buried at Widmerpool in 1588. He left a will in which he names many Cliffs, but specifies his relationship to his brother Henry Cliff only. He left his lease of land to Henry Cliff; after Henry's death to Robert Cliff; after Robert's death to Thomas Cliff; after Thomas' death to Nicholas Cliff. He also mentioned his uncle Loe, and female Cliffs: Amye Cliffe, Medweyn Cliffe, Issabell Cliffe, Margaret Cliffe, and Anne Cliff.
