Early in life, he was a frameworkknitter (generally abbreviated FWK) in Nottingham. From 1813 through 1821 (according to baptismal records for his daughters) he was a FWK, living on Apple Row in Nottingham. By the time his wife died in 1843, he was a coal dealer in Sneinton.

Also in the household was a "servant of all work" named Elizabeth Pearson, age 19, born in Nottingham.
