Betsey CLARK age 25, a spisnter, a servant, The Green F, father William CLARK a labourer witnesses John Bailey and Fanny Clark

[Note:-John SPICER (1841-1925) was the son of David SPICER (c1806-1886) a native of Buckland Newton in Dorset, by his 1st wife Ann nee ROBERTS (1808-1851) who originated from Frampton. By the time of his parents marriage however both had moved their places of settlement, David to Broadwey and Ann to Winterbourne Monkton in Dorset. Banns were read in both parishes on 12th,19th and 26th April before they married in Ann's parish of Winterbourne Monkton on 10th May 1835. John was baptised at Broadway in Dorset on 10th Oct 1841 but his mother died at the age of 43 and was buried at Broadway on 6th Aug 1851. His father re-married to Mary GILLARD during 1st qtr 1854 at Weymouth. As we might expect John's youth was spent moving with his father, an agricultural carter, as he sought work on the local farms. John was still with the family in 1861 by which time they were all living at Damer's Barn in Fordington.

Betsey SPICER nee CLARKE (1843-1897) picture left - consistently gives her place of birth as Charminster in Dorset around the year 1844 and of course the marriage above gives her fathers name as William Clark. She appears to have been the 7th child from the marriage of William CLARK (d.1865) a labourer to Mary BLACKMORE (1803-1882) at Charminster on 18th Nov 1830. The baptism of her first 5 siblings are all at Charminster and straightforward (1) Sarah bap 10th June 1832 - buried aged 5 at Charminster on 23rd Jan 1838. (2) Elizabeth bap 25th May 1834 - buried aged 3 years at Charminster 20 Feb 1838 (3) William bap 24th Apr 1836 he married at Fordington twice 1st to Mary Jane Norris 6th Sep 1868 and 2nd to Sarah Ann Russell on 5th Sep 1872 (4). John bap 27th May 1838 he also married at Fordington to Ellen Legg on 25th Oct 1874 (5). Emma bap 25 May 1838. She married John Bailey at Fordington on 10th Mar 1864. Unfortunately I have not been able to locate a baptism for the next two children (6) Mary (c1841) who disappears after 1851 and (7) Elizabeth (recorded at the GRO as Bessy Clark 2nd qtr 1843 in district of Dorchester Ref 8/53) ) She is recorded as Elizabeth in the 1851 census but as Betsy in 1861 whilst still living with the family at Worth Matravers. She seems to have taken her name from Mary's mother (Betty Blackmore who aged 77 was living with them in 1841 and was buried as Elizabeth Blackmore at Charminster aged 77 on 13th Dec 1842. Their final child (8) Fanny Clark was born at Bhompston Farm a hamlet within the parish of nearby Stinsford and she was baptised in the local church on the 2nd April 1848. She married at Fordington to George Jeffries Pitman on 25th Aug 1878. Shortly after the 1861 Census the family moved to live at Fordington hence all the marriages there.

After marriage they moved regularly, initially living for a time on Loud's Road in East Fordington, but by 1871 they were back at Damer's Barn John working as a carter. From there they moved to Fordington Cross (1873), back to Damer's Barn (1875-1878); then into Fordington Field (1880) and finally at Poundbury Farm by 1881. Betsey died at Poundbury Farm at the age of 55 years on 7th April 1897 and was buried 2 days later in St George's graveyard (See memorials) . After her death John moved to live at 10 King street in Dorchester where he lived with his youngest daughter but by 1911, now aged 69, he was staying with his eldest daughter Frances and her husband Robert Ballard. John died circa June 1925 at the age of 84 ] They had the following children:-

    (1) Frances Ann SPICER (1868-1940) recrded as the daughter of John & Betsey SPICER was born at Loud's Road and duly baptised at St Georges Church in Fordington on 28th Mar 1869. She was single in 1891 aged 22, a general domestic servant but married in the 3rd qtr 1893 to a Corporal in the Royal Horse Artillery stationed at Fordington Barracks called Robert Ballard (1856-1917). He was born circa 1859 at Hamilton Lancashire and they raised a family of 10 children.

    (2) David John SPICER (1871-1936) was baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 07 May 1871. He married in 2nd qtr 1896 to Julia Annie SAWYER and moved to raise a family in Piddletown Dorset. He died at the age of 65 in Dec 1936

    (3) James Albert SPICER (1873-1928) He was baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 6th April 1873. By the age of 18 he was already working on Poundbury Farm as a carter but progressed to become a groom working at Bettisfield. He married at the age of 26 in the parish church at Askerwell on 19th Oct 1899 to Eliza Ellen the daughter of a labourer Robert FARWELL who had been born in Netherbury. They moved to Yorkshire living in 1911 at Swinton Grange Malton where they raised a family.James died at Malton aged 55 in Dec 1928.

    (4) William George SPICER (1875-1899) He was baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 7th Mar 1875 and by the age of 16 was working as an agricultural labourer on Poundbury Farm. He had an affair with Bessie Annie ADAMS (who also seems to have worked on the farm) by whom he had a daughter born on 5th May 1897. Bessie returned to her family to have the baby living at 5 Stewards Court in Melcombe Regis They named her Violet Bessie and she was baptised at Melmbe Regis on 23rd of the same month. William however found work at Middle Farm in Fordington but soon sickened and before he died they married at Christchurch in West Fordington on 9th March 1899. Bessie who was stioll only 20 years old at marriage still gives her abode as Poundbury Farm. William was buried at Fordington on 29th April 1899. Bessie now a widow moved to Charminster to live with her brother Frederick and in 1906 re-married to Charles Robert Furmage

    (5) Arthur Edward SPICER (1877- aft 1911) He was baptised on 24th June 1877 at Christchurch in West Fordington and was already working by the age of 13 as an agricultural labourer on Pounbury Farm. He became a coachman and married in Malton in Yorkshire (where his brother James was living) in 3rd qtr of 1907 to Hannah BUTTERICK a widow. In 1911 they were both living at Swinton Grange Malton but are shown on separate but successive returns.
