The Will of John Prowse Yeoman of Fordington

The Last Will and Testament: of me John PROWSE of Ffordington in the County of Dorsett Yeoman being aged & infirm in body but of sound and perfect mind and memory (thanks be given to God Almighty)

Impremis: (In the first Place) I give unto my grandaughter Anne SQUIBB daughter of Robert SQUIBB late of Ffordington aforesaid Yeoman deceased All these my household goods now being in the dwelling house of Charles PITFIELD situate in Ffordington aforesaid. To my said grandaughter I also give the sume of Ten pounds to be her when she shall attain the age of one and twenty years, or day of marriage which shall first happen.

Item: I give unto my four grandchildren Sarah, John, Thomas & Robert HARDY daughter & sons of John HARDY of Charminster in the County aforesaid Yeoman the sume of fforty shillings a peece [piece or each] to be paid unto the said John HARDY the ffather to & for the use of his said daughter and son within the space of one year next after my decease whose receipt to my executrix shall be had sufficient discharge in that behalf

Item: I give unto my grandchildren Samuel & Elizabeth HAYN son and daughter of John HAYN of Litton Cheiney in the said County Yeoman the sume of fforty shillings a peece to be paid unto the said John HAYN to and for the use of his said son & daughter within the space of one year after my decease whose receipt to my said executrix shalbe [shall be] sufficient discharge.

All: Other my goods chattells and personall estate I give unto my wife Ffrances PROWSE whome I hereby make Executrix and Residuary Legatee of this my said last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all former Wills and Testaments by me made

In Witness: whereof I have hereunto sett my hand & seal the Twenty Third Day of May Anno Dm. [In the year of Our Lord] One Thousand Seven Hundred & Twenty

Genealogical Notes:-

(1): John PROWSE of Stratton married Francis COLLINS a widow at St Georges Church Fordington by licence on 03-Jan 1709/10

(2): John PROWSE was buried in St Georges churchyard on 14th February 1721/2

(3): There is a Latin inscription on the spine of the Will which would need proper translation to be sure but appears to state that the Testament was proved before John Jacob MA and Thomas Wyatt MA Prebendary of Fordington & Writhlington on17th May 1722. John Jacob was Vicar of Fordington 1714 to 1759 and his patron was Thomas Wyatt. Signed by George Frome the registrar.

(4): His wife Frances PROWSE [PROUSE] died in 1738 being buried at Fordington on 26th January 1738/9 at the age of 89. She wrote a Will five years earlier and a Transcription of it can be accesssed via this link
