Near this spot lie the remains of
Mrs ELIZABETH COZENS.
who died on the 9th of March 1821 aged 84 years
She was the youngest Daughter of the late Revd Edward COZENS
A.M. Rector of Yarlington in Somersetshire and Master of the free
Grammer School in this Town. By her last Will dated 19th of
November 1818. She bequeathed to the Rector and Ministers
for the time being of the Parishes of Holy Trinity St Peter
and All Saints in Dorchester and to Benjamin JEFFRIES and
James PARSONS 500l. Stock in the Navy 5per cent annuities.
IN TRUST to apply the interest in January yearly as follows;
vix among the poor women aged 50 or above of good character
and not having received parochial relief within the six months
preceding, resident in St Peter's 6l.
in the Holy Trinity 5l
and in All Saints 5l
and equally among the inhabitants of Chubb's Almshouse 5l
of Napper's Almshouse 2l.10s.
and of Whetstone's Almshouse 2l.10s


To record to posterity the above Bequests.

Genealogical Notes:-

Elizabeth COZENS [COSENS] (1737-1821) was baptised at St Peters Church Dorchester on 2nd January 1737/8. She never married and as far as I know remained throughout her 84 years living in Dorchester. She had an older sister Mary baptised at St Peters on 15th June 1736.

Her father the Rev. Edward COZENS MA (1690-1753) was the son of Richard COZENS of Castle Cary in Somerset. He matriculated at the age of 18 at Queens College Oxford on 23rd March 1707/8 and went on to obtain his BA there in 1711. He joined the church being ordained a decon at Wells Bishops Palace Trinity Chapel on 16th March 1712 and a priest on 21st December the same year. On the 8th January 1714 he was made curate of Brympton and appointed Rector of Yarlington on 25th July 1723. He continued his studies being incorporated into Cambridge where he gained his MA degree from Magdalen College in 1730.

The Rev Edward COZENS was buried at St Peters Church on 10th December 1753. He left a Will which is at The National Archives Ref PROB 11/806.
