He says he is 47 years of age and looks it". Given uncertainty over his age could be one of a number of individuals

    Complaint: - Medical Disability Report: "Case of Private Henry HILLIARD No.305 71 Regiment: Labourer 30 years of age 13 years 1 month service of which 7 years in Canada, 3 years Bermuda and rest at home. Disease Phthisis pulmonary has laboured under physical symptoms since 1828. The disease now has assumed a more decided character of late, and the patient has for some time laboured under dyspnoea and palpitations, sight ???. loss of appetite and emaciation.His employment at a bandsman (Instrument the trombone has proved very injurious to his health and treatment in this country is not likely to prove beneficial. His character is good. The board are of the opinion that the conduct of Private Henry Hellier has been that of a good and efficient soldier seldom in Hospital trustworthy and sober and moreover the court has to record that he has won since the 29th July 1837 one distinguishing ring for good conduct and that he has received the additional pay attached to that distinction. Discharged 8th Jan 1840
    Comments: - [Note:- Henry Webber HELLIER the son of Ann HELLIER was born in St Peters Parish on 28th Oct 1809 and baptised in St Peters church on 10th December 1809. He appears to have been illegitimate and Webber may have been the fathers surname to help ensure that maintenance was paid - If so common to drop the second name in adulthood.]

Disability According to the surgeons report annexed it appears that this is a case of disease arising from natural causes without being attributed to neglect design his intemperance and the Regimental Board approve of the opinion of the Surgeons it is shown by the proceedings of the Board hereto annexed. Principal Medical Officer Chatham 22nd July 1841 After examination at this General Hospital I am of the opinion that Joseph NOAKES is unfit for service and likely to be permanently disqualified for military duty from Pulmonary Consumption.

    Complaint: - Medical Disability Private John WARREN labours under general debility and incapacity for Military duty. He is unable to carry his knapsack or bear the fatigues of a march. He has not been in hospital latterly nor does he appear likely to derive any benefit from medical treatment from his impaired constitution After twenty two and a half years service I am of the opinion that he is a fir object for discharge this debility does not seem to have been aggravated by vice or intemperance. Found unfit for further service due to general debility.28th June 1842 and discharged at Londenderry when 43 years and 5 months old
    Comments: - His Character is good. It appears that he was tried by a Regimental Court Martial at Gibraltar on the 30th August 1830 for highly disrespectful conduct towards Serjeant Cragg. He was again tried by Regimental Court Martial at Londonderry on 3rd January 1842 for having been ??? ??? at Lifford ??? the 31st December 1841 when left to give over the Barracks there upon the Relief of the detachment to which he had belonged

The 11th Light Dragoons were part of Wellington's great victory over Marmont at Salamanca on 22nd July 1812 but by 3rd April 1813 they had to give up their horses and embark for England much to the regret of Sir Stapleton Cotton who was in command of the cavalry in the Peninsula. It had been a hard two years for them having lost 417 men and 555 horses]
