Anson County North Carolina

Jochiam moved from Virginia to Anson County North Carolina.

"Anson County was formed in 1750 from Bladen County. It was named in honor of George, Lord Anson, a celebrated English admiral who circumnavigated the globe. It is in the south center section of the State and is bounded by the state of South Carolina and Union, Stanly, and Richmond counties. In 1787, Newton, the county seat, was changed to Wadesboro." Source - NC Encyclopedia British

Admiral Lord George Anson, a First Lord of the Admiralty commanded the vessel which brought Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Germany, to her future husband King George III. Germans emigrated to the area around Anson County, as did many settlers from the British Isles, Africa, and Moravia.

In 1750 Anson County was formed from Bladen County. At that time, it reached all the way to the Mississippi River. It has been cut in physical size five times. The following counties were once part of Anson County: Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Cabarrus, Caldwell, Catawba, Cherokee, Clay, Cleveland, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Gaston, Graham, Guilford, Haywood, Henderson, Iredell, Jackson, Lincoln, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mecklenburg, Mitchell, Montgomery, Polk, Randolph, Richmond, Rockingham, Rowan, Rutherford, Scotland, Stanley, Stokes, Surry, Swain, Transylvania, Tryon, Union, Watauga, Wilkes, Yadkin, Yancey. General timeline of Jochaim's Life

24 September 1777 -Indenture Wm. Brooks of Anson County to Joakim Hudson of same County. For the sum of 45 pounds for 69a lying in Anson Co on both sides of Richardsons Creek beginning at a White Oak ...!. This land was granted by patent to the said Brooks by George Augustus Shelvil on 6 Mar 1767 with 1/2 all gold and silver mines excepted. (117) Source Stephen R and Pamela D Hudson at Rootsweb. Need copy of original deed. (Joachiam aged 44 )

2 Jan 1779 - owned 100 acres of land lying in Anson CO NC on the fork of Bear branch between Morris Poole & Thomas Gilbert including his own improvement. (117) Source Stephen R and Pamela D Hudson at Rootsweb. Need copy of original record. (Jochiam aged 45)

1790 Anson CO NC census pg 35- Joakin Hutson was listed as over 16 with no other males and with 4 females. ( There is also a Joseph Hudson and a William Hudson.) Our Jochaim would have been aged 56-7 at this time. It would suggest that children would have been adults and it is therefore likely that William and Joshua were his children.

As referenced by HFA Director of Genealogy and Archivist, Betty Jo Hudson, the Hudson name has been spelled HODSON-HUDSON-and HUTSON in various land records and other official documentation. It is therefore likely that this is our Jochiam Hudson and the census taker misspelled the last name.

19 Apr 1796 - A land grant #1343 was made to Joacim Hudson on by the State of NC at 50 sh per 100 acres for 50 acres lying in Anson County on both sides of Richardson Creek adjoining lands of Josiah Wright. 1800 Anson CO NC census pg 218, Joakim Hudson is listed as over 45 with 1 male < 10 and his wife is over 45 with 1 female <10 and 1 10-16. (There is also a Joshua Hudson and a William Hutson. Joshua is 26-45 and William is 26-45 which suggests that they both could be sons of Joakim.) Source Stephen R and Pamela D Hudson at Rootsweb. Need copy of original record. (Jochiam aged 67) The 1800 Census linked above is a page index only. There are Hudsons listed on pages 216 - 219. William and Joshua are both listed in the 1790 Census as well.

March 1818 bill of Partition - in Darlington South Carolina. The petition was filed by his second wife Sarah Hickson upon his death. We know that she was his second wife because of the wording of the petition which was filed against the Hudson brothers: Elijah, Jesse, Jacob, William and Reuben. The petition is based upon an agreement that Sarah and Jochiam made before his death regarding her children of a previous marriage. Based on Jochiam's age, and the wording of the document, it would appear that Jacob and Sarah had no children together. We have no knowledge of Jochiams first wife and the mother of the children of that marriage. One source states his first wife's name was Elizabeth. Source - Jennifer Hudson Taylor (Jochiam deceased at age 84)

Additional fact - 5 Act 1814 - An indenture by William Hudson of Anson CO to Spear Maori of the same CO for the sum of $400.00 for 159 acres. The first tract lying in Anson CO on the S bank of Richardsons Creek ad Joacim Hudson's old line and his own 100 a tract. The second tract adjoining the corner of Jacob Thomas on Richardsons Creek containing 100 a. Wit: Wm. Crittendon, Armiger Lilly, Signed: William Hudson. 1. Elijah Hudson born 1769 in Anson County, North Carolina or Prince George County, Virginia and died in 1843 in Jefferson County, Georgia Buried Providence Baptist Church, Highway 88E, Avera, Jefferson County, GA married to Unknown Youney bet. 1789-1794 in one of the following possible states - VA, NC, SC, GA - married second to Sarah Fontaine 10 Jan 1821 in Jefferson County Georgia, daughter of Peter Benjamin Fontaine and Mary Bruton.

All records above indicate that Jochiam did not arrive in Anson County until 1777. Elijah could have been born in Virginia in 1769 (Jochiam would have been 36 in 1769) - Uncertain as to how the year 1769 was arrived at for an estimated birth year. LMW

2. William Hudson was born aft 1757 in Anson County North Carolina or Prince George County, Virginia and died bef 1850 in Sumter County Georgia

Source of Estimated Birth Year and Place - Records of Fayetteville District Anson County North Carolina, See Father's information - Jochiam was about 20 years old in 1757 making that likely the earliest date for a first marriage and the birth of a child. Jochiam does not appear to have arrived in North Carolina from Virginia until about 1777. William's actual birth year could be as much as 20 plus years from this estimated year. LMW

Jesse probably either moved with his father after 1810, or was already living in Darlington County, South Carolina when his elderly father relocated.

Generation Five Jacob Hudson
(or Generation Nine - if Richard Hudson is correctly attached to Gentleman Henry Hudson)

Jacob Hudson -born March 6, 1788 in Anson County, North Carolina died August 25, 1870 in Darlington County, South Carolina buried possibly in private family cemetery in Darlington County, South Carolina married first to (--?--) and second between 1840-1850 to Mary Unknown - born abt. 1810 and died June 24, 1889 -

Jacob Hudson was the first Deacon at Sardis Baptist Church. One of the Charter Members at Sardis Baptist Church 1840. A blank page was left in his honor in the minutes of the Sardis Church. A memorial was set up in Sardis Church by the church as a whole. Jacob gave land to Sardis Church for its cemetery. Records of Sardis Baptist Church referenced by the writings of Ellen Rodriques Hudson

"He was a good neighbor, a kind father of Ezra A., etc and affectionate husband to his wife Mary; he lived to be 80 years old, five months and died in his sleep, August 25, 1870." From his obituary or toombstone, not specified in the writings of Ellen Rodriques Hudson.

His wife, Mary, born 1810, died June 24, 1889 is thought to be buried in private family cemetery. Source: Ellen Rodriques Hudson and Donald Ross McLeod Jr., son of Alice Ophelia Hudson

The Hudsons were instrumental in the development of the Sardis Community in Darlington County South Carolina. The family operated a toll bridge across the Lynch River, called apparently Pigotts Ferry. (or Generation Eleven - - if Richard Hudson is correctly attached to Gentleman Henry Hudson)

Ashby Orr Hudson born July 1, 1860 in Darlington County, South Carolina died October 28, 1911 in Sardis Darlington District South Carolina buried New Zion Baptist Church - married to Louisa Ann Dennis born August 27, 1860 in New Zion, Clarendon County, South Carolina died New Zion, Clarendon County, South Carolina buried New Zion Baptist Church

Occupation: Senior owner of HUDSON & BAKER LIVERY STABLE in Kingstree, SC (still standing in 1994)

Property: Lynches Creek in Sardis- purchased 100 acres from L.M. Kirby after the burning of the Plantation Home inherited by Louisa Ann Dennis from her Father. The plantation house sat on 200 acres. . (Near New Zion, SC where US Highway 301 now runs).

Ashby and Louisa lived on half of what had been a large plantation. The Plantation had been owned by Lou's parents, Daniel E. and Sidaleen Goodman Dennis. Daniel and Sidaleen raised horses supported by slave labor. During the Civil War, the horses were taken by the Army for use in the war. I have no information as to which Army seized the horses, but can assume from the local history that it was the Confederate Army. (For information on the Dennis Family, please see their pages.)

"Marion Vaughn Hudson, known as Reece, met a tragic end. He was barely wounded in a fight at a country store, in New Zion, after being hit by a large piece of wood by the man he was fighting- Jesse Morris. Marion was hospitalized for some time and returned home only to be found dead on the floor of the house a few weeks later. An inquest was held but no verdict was returned, although evidence of murder was found. There were footmarks on his arms where he had been held down on the floor, etc." Source: The Writings of Donald Ross McLeod Jr., nephew of Marion

Reese was a bachelor, but rumor had it that he had a girl friend and three children somewhere in the area. At the wake or funeral, all of the family members watched closely as the women of the community passed by the open casket. They were watching for some sign of emotion that would indicate a relationship. None was observed. That rumor was put to rest with Uncle Reece." The following is based upon family stories. No effort has been made to verify or disprove any details given here, therefore not all may be considered accurate. The information is included here only to preserve family stories as those who would pass them on have themselves passed away. We can research the facts of someone's life, but the essence is harder to learn. These stories help us to remember that these were living, breathing, loving, and hating human beings as are we.

Daniel Dennis gave to his daughter, Louisa Ann Hudson (wife of Ashby Orr Hudson) 200 acres of land and the Plantation House (a large 3 story house). It is said that Louisa took care of her father for ten years after the death of Sidaline, his wife. His son, Henry, was given 200 acres and a small house on the other side of the road. (Near New Zion, SC where US Highway 301 now runs).Henry was very upset over this.

Several nights later the plantation home was burned. Law Officers were called and blood hounds were brought out and the arsonist trail was followed to the door of Henry's house. Nothing is known to what happened to Henry as a result of this, but a short time later Henry was afflicted and unable to walk for the rest of his life. Family Lore has it that Uncle Henry was cursed by someone with "the Power"

The night of the fire, Ashby was rushing home in his buckboard with his best team of horses. Someone had closed the normally open gate to the plantation and as the team approached they came to a sudden and abrupt stop, tipping over the buckboard. Ashby was severely wounded and never completely recovered.

After the fire, the family moved to Sardis but Louisa was unhappy and wanted to return to New Zion. The Ashby Orr Hudson's then moved into the barn on the Dennis property and lived there until Ashby died at the age of 51. Ashby had accumulated enough building materials to replace the plantation house, but upon his death, the story goes that the eldest son, Corbett Hudson sold all the materials and it was several years later that the family was able to build a new home.

The children of Ashby and Louisa eventually all moved to Florence, South Carolina and began their own lives. If anyone ever spoke of returning to New Zion, they were discouraged due to some mysterious fear, very possibly the fear of the curse some believed placed on Louisa's brother years before
