Generation One Reddick Moseley

Reddick Moseley b. Abt. 1772 Robeson County, North Carolina, British Colonies d. Bef. Jan 31, 1852 Sumter or Kershaw District, South Carolina, United States of America married to Nancy Clybourne b. Abt. 1779 Robeson County, North Carolina, British Colonies d. unknown Sumter or Kershaw District, South Carolina, United States of America

Generation Two: John C Moseley

John C. Moseley b. Abt. 1795 Robeson County, NC or Lancaster District SC d. Abt. Apr 23, 1862 Drowned while fishing with his sons in the Wateree River married Catherine McLeod b. bet. 1812 and 1818 on the Horsepen Branch Tributary of Beaverdam Branch in Kershaw District South Carolina. (Her gravestone at Antioch Baptist Church reads "about 81 years" which would make her birth year cr 1812 and her age in the 1850 Sumter Census was 32 making birth year 1818).

Note: Earlier researchers of Catherine and her McLeod family placed her childhood home on the Swift River in Kershaw - this Swift River reference was taken from the writings of Catherine's niece Nicey Jane McLeod Holland Hughes but recent research has discovered that Nicey was referencing the Swift River/Creek property of her own father, John N. McLeod (Catherine's brother). Whether some of John N.'s property had been that of his father and inherited from that estate is unknown to date.

1830 - 1840 Catherine McLeod Marriage to John C. Moseley

Catherine was not present in the 1830 Kershaw District Census enumeration of her mother. Sarah is listed as a head of household but the ages of the children present indicate that they were brothers Alexander E. McLeod and Angus McLeod (born shortly after the 1820 census but before January 8 1824 the date their father wrote his Will), and her sister Jane.

From the fact that Catherine was not present in her mother's home and that she was aged about 15-18, it could be assumed that she and John C. Moseley were married by 1830. Yet, some researchers have stated that John was married prior to his marriage to Catherine - where then was Catherine in 1830? There was extended family in the area and it is possible that she was living with one of those families.

John C. Moseley is said to have been born about 1795. Family files differ on the state of birth; some say he was born in Robeson County, NC while others state the place of birth as Lancaster District South Carolina. The 1860 Sumter County South Carolina Census states that John was born in North Carolina - yet the 1850 states South Carolina.

In the 1830 Kershaw District Census - there were four Moseley's enumerated - Reddick (said to have been John's father), Matthew, Lewis, and Cradick. In Reddick's household there were three males besides himself - 1 10-15 and two 15-20 - John would have been aged about 35 and so is not present in this household. Nor does a male reside in any of the other three households that may have been John C. Moseley. There do not appear to have been any Moseley's in Sumter District. Searches using ancestry.com - the index may not be complete

Internet searches have revealed that John C. Moseley may have been married twice prior to his marriage to Catherine - this information is placed here for research purposes only as I have not validated the claims:

1st marriage said to be to: Sarah Jane BLACKWELL b: ABT 1800 in maybe SC
2nd marriage said to be to Sarah Jane THOMPSON b: ABT 1800 in maybe SC

Also found a John C. Moseley married to a Sarah Stuckey with a child named John C. Moseley born 1829. States that John Jr. married Sarah J. Turner - OUR John C Junior married a Nancy Turner about the same time in 1851. No sources given for marriage and child. Ancestry World Connect Database of James Hope accessed May 2 2003 (as of January 31 2009 - the database is no longer available.)

The 1840 Sumter Census of John Moseley and Catherine McLeod does appear to bear out an earlier marriage:

Census Place: Kershaw County, South Carolina; Census Year 1840, "Electronic," , "Electronic," page 32 Head of Household - John Moseley: census research by Lori McLeod Wilke

ii. John Oliver Moseley b. abt 1871 in De Kalb Kershaw District, South Carolina source: Family Search Microfilm: 1394447 d. 1924 Occupation: Journalist - John Oliver Moseley wrote several articles about the people who died in the Cleveland School Fire including his first cousin once removed Mannus Baum McLeod and second cousins Bernell and Miller McLeod, the sons of Ashmore Calhoun and Julia Barnes. J. O. Moseley, The Terrible Cleveland Fire, Charleston, S.C.: Southern Printing and Publishing Co., 1923. Copy of Articles provided by Trish Sanders Brown - descendant of Mannius Baum and Alice Cook McLeod

The Book Written by J. O. Mosely - he was living in Charleston, his "adopted home" at the time of the School Fire and hurried home to Camden.

"A brother of the writer, J. H. Moseley, who was responsible for the presence of two young ladies at the entertainment, rescued both from the burning building, and they three were catching those jumping from the windows, when a heavy person jumped into the arms of one of the ladies and crushed her to the ground, breaking a leg, and otherwise injuring her, and then the brother had to leave off the work of rescue and take her to the Camden hospital six miles distant, and then take the sister to her home at Bishopville, more than twenty miles distant, and report to her father the calamity that had befallen his own home as well as nearly every home in the surrounding country, and had brought sorrow to the whole state and the civilized world, and just to mention almost any name on the list of killed or injured or bereaved, brings a tinge of sorrow over the soul of the writer, who knew most intimately nearly every one so affected, for forty or more years of his life had been spent in the community and for many years he was superintendent of a Sunday school nearby, and was otherwise pleasantly associated with them. Nearly half of those destroyed were closely related either by blood or marriage, and those who were not so related were just as dear to him as if they were fleshly kin. We will mention them by chapters, or families, as they appeared on the bulletin board at the News & Courier office on the morning after the fire. "

"Then, at the age of seventeen, we, with a brother, went to Thompson military school at Siler City, N. C. Eugene {Brown} was among the first to greet us and give us a welcome that we shall never forget, for it was our first trip so far from home, and we needed all the help we could get to keep us from getting too homesick. We were intimate friends as long as we were at school, and then he married Miss Margaret Wilson, who was at one time teacher of the Cleveland school.

"Robert F. Saffold was not born in Sumter. He, we believe, was born in Georgia. The earliest census records show him residing with his grandmother there. Also, oral history records his coming from Georgia to Sumter where he met and married my grandmother. However, my efforts and those of my great aunt Jennie Smith Merrit have ended at dead ends finding his birth records -- parents, exact place of birth, etc. John Saffold Saturday, March 12, 2011

Deaths of John C. Moseley and Catherine McLeod

John died in April of 1862 while fishing with his sons on the Wateree River. An account of his death was found in the family records of William "Bill" Johnson (Mary Lucille McLeod Johnson, Aunt Kate McLeod and her husband William McLeod- Bill a "double" McLeod - maternal great grandparents Jesse L. McLeod and Maggie Josey; paternal great grandparents John R. McLeod and Sarah Cason) Apparently the boat tipped and John died while rescuing one of his sons - whether the son survived is unknown - I did not have time to transcribe them since we were at a Family Reunion. ( McLeod Reunion, June 2003; Lugoff Baptist Church, South Carolina).

John C. Moseley - Probate Estate Filed in Sumter County Bundle 144 pkg 11 / Administrative Bond of Estate filed April 23 1862 - Witnessed / Administrator Catherine Moseley Probate Index Sumter South Carolina

The File is mostly illegible - some of the names that can be read include A. McLeod (one of her brothers - either Alexander or Angus), the John N. McLeod and Clarkson company (of which nothing is known except that it is named in this Estate File and in the Estate File of John N. McLeod who would die in July of 1862)

Catherine McLeod Moseley died on Jan 29, 1893 at approximately 81 years of age and was buried near the McLeod Family Plot at Antioch Baptist Church as were her three brothers, several neices and nephews and at least two of her own children - Captain Alexander Moseley and Eliza Moseley Brown. Her tombstone was placed by her son, George Washington Moseley before his death.
