George Foster on Flatt Creek

George moved to Amelia County about 1746. He married Mary Forrest, probably just before moving to Amelia County. He lived there the rest of his life and died testate in 1772. George and Mary had ten children: James Foster, Abraham Forrest Foster, George Foster, Temperance Foster, Mary Foster, Judith Foster, John Foster, Travis Foster, Giles Foster and Sally Foster.

BIRTH

The birth year for George Foster can only be roughly estimated. The earliest record for him is the 1746 purchase of land when he would have been at least 21 years old or born before 1725.[1] His oldest known child, James, was born about 1748. Assuming George was 21 when he married and 22 when his first child was born, George would have been born before 1726. This is later than 1725 so before 1725 is a better estimate.

MARRIAGE

George married Mary Forrest, daughter of Abraham Forrest of Gloucester County, Virginia. Abraham moved to Amelia County in 1750 and purchased land on the south side of Deep Creek and Coopers Branch. The deed described Abraham as being of Gloucester County.[2] He died testate in Amelia County about 1758-1759 and named his daughter Mary Foster in his will.[3] Mary died in Nottoway County (Nottoway was formed from Amelia County in 1789) in 1800 and her surviving children sold the home tract the same year.

DEATH

George died testate in Amelia County about 1772. His will was dated 14 Dec 1771 and proved 27 Sept 1772. The will named ten children: James, Abraham, George, John, Patience, Giles, Judith, Mary, Sally and Temperance. James, Abraham and George received land in neighboring Prince Edward County. The will was witnessed by Edmund Borum, Ishmael Davis and Bartholomew Dupuy.[4] After Mary's death about 1800, the land in Amelia County was sold by the remaining heirs: Abraham and Annis Foster of Prince Edward County, George and Elizabeth Foster of Prince Edward County, John and Lucy Foster of Nottoway County, Shadrach and Judith Holt of Nottoway County, Noton and Judah Dickerson of Nottoway County, James and Sally Fowlkes of Pittsylvania County and James Foster of Davidson County, Tennessee. [5]

IDENTITY OF GEORGE FOSTER ON FLATT CREEK

Two men named George Foster lived in Amelia County in roughly the same time period. Tax lists show that one man lived on Sandy Creek in Raleigh Parish and the other on Flatt Creek in Nottoway Parish. George on Sandy Creek was first taxed in 1741 while George on Flatt Creek was first taxed in 1746. Both men lived in Amelia County the remainder of their lives and died there, George SC about 1790 and George FC about 1772.

CHILDREN

James Foster was the oldest son of George Foster and probably born about 1748 in Amelia County. He married Martha Dupuy and had three known children: George, Susannah and Mary. In 1786 James patented land in Davidson County, Tennessee and sold parts of that patent in 1790 and 1796. I have not been able to trace him further.

Abraham Forrest Foster was born about 1750. He married Annis McGehee, daughter of Jacob McGehee of Prince Edward County, Virginia. He died testate 1808-1809 and named eight children in his will: Booker, George, John, Sally, Nelley, Polley, Betsy and Nancy.

George Foster was born perhaps in 1753. He married twice, first to Judith Price and second to Elizabeth (Jones) Foster, widow of Robert Foster, the son of James on Coopers Branch. George died testate in Prince Edward County in January, 1810. His will names five children by his first wife: Jane, Elizabeth, Tabitha, John and Williamson, and seven children by his second wife: Nancy, Daniel, Maria, Peter B., Patrick H., Nelson K., and Martha A.

Temperance Foster died before 1786 as she was not named as an heir to her brother Travis Foster when his estate was settled.[6]

Mary Foster married Noton Dickerson before 1800 when the heirs of George Foster sold the home tract in Nottoway County. [7]

Judith Foster married Shadrack Holt before 1800 when the heirs of George Foster sold the home tract in Nottoway County. [8]

John Foster was born after 1750 and before 1757. He married Lucy (—? —) before 1786 when she gave her dower release to land that he sold. John died intestate in Barren County, Kentucky about 1824. His estate was distributed among nine children: Sarah, Paschal, Henry, Dabney, John T., an unnamed daughter who married Thomas Duncan, Frances, Miranda and Nancy.

Travis Foster died intestate before 9 Apr 1786 when his estate was distributed among his surviving siblings: James Foster, Abraham Foster, George Foster, John Foster, Shadrack Holt, Norton Dickerson and James Fowlkes. [9]

Giles Foster died before 1786 as he was not named as an heir to his brother Travis Foster when his estate was settled. [10]

Sally Foster was probably born about 1762. She married James Fowlkes in 1780 and required her mother's consent so she was perhaps 18 years old. John Fowlkes consented for James. [11] In 1800 James and Sally were living in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. [12]
