A simple family history project has morphed into a study of African American families in the four-corners region of Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma.
Though my research focuses primarily on my paternal lineage, it has expanded to include African Americans who migrated from northwest Arkansas to southeast Missouri, as well as others who emigrated to Kansas from Texas.
My COKER and STINNETT families migrated from Marion County Arkansas to Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas.
I am also a descendant of Exodusters from Grimes County, Texas. My paternal great-grandmother,Charity Brown, was among a group of families who left Texas by wagon in 1880 and migrated to southeast Kansas. Many of these families settled in Labette County - Oswego, Chetopa and Parsons - and many of their descendants can still be found in the area.
