We began to use fine feed today the 12 for little pigs January 12. Fred Stevens died Monday Oct 6, 1908 Elijah Pember December 1st Tuesday 1908.


Newspaper Clipping:


SALVE FOR TENDER FEET. I would like to have someone with tender feet try this salve: Try out gently some mutton tallow. Do not cook it. Just gently try out, then it will be more creamy. Strain and add about a tablespoon of camphor and ½ teaspoon of

carbolic acid to a tumbler of the tallow. This is excellent for chapped lips or hands, also for burns and bruises of all kinds. Leominster Reader.

Thursday, Jan. 9, 1908


Stil pleasant. J. and I went down to the village I paid $135. Dollars for rent. Wind blew cold coming up the hills.





Friday, Jan. 10, 1908


Cold but pleasant. Ellen came up a few minutes. Joe began to draw logs for wood today. The mill over to soap stone ledge burn up last night no whistles today.





Saturday, Jan. 11, 1908


Bright and pleasant. Howard came over and stayed a little while. Amanda and Carl came over and at night Pansie. Joe drawing logs. Pansie came over in evening and Uncle Hurburt was dead. He died the 10 at one o’clock.





Sunday, Jan 12, 1908


Rough and stormy. Abbie and Henry went today to E. Bethel To Uncle Hurburts funeral had Joe sleigh. Rough day not very cold.





Monday, Jan 13, 1908


Cloudy quite warm. Joe drawed logs to saw for wood. Abbie and H. got home tonight. Howard took the sleigh home.





Tuesday, Jan 14, 1908


Cold bright. I washed the colored clothes. Joe went over to Charlies got the hind sled.





Wednesday, Jan 15, 1908


Cold and pleasant. I made pies and made Joe a pair of mittens. Joe drawed wood.





Thursday, Jan 16, 1908


Windy, not so awful cold in day time zero at night. Charlie and Powers came up and worked drawed out in afternoon with Charlies horses.





Friday, Jan 17, 1908


Pleasant. We killed and dressed six chickens and Joe carried them to Rochester. Edd Perce had them just $3. he got. He got grain.





Saturday, Jan 18, 1908


Pleasant. I do not feel good, in bed. Abbie came over and staid a little while.





Sunday, Jan 19, 1908


Pleasant and the cold at night. Carl and Emma came over and staid a while and at night Anna and Joe went and got mail. My head aches hard.





Monday, Jan 20, 1908


Cold. Joe got a load of logs for wood. I am up.





Tuesday, Jan 21, 1908


Bright and pleasant. Thaws on north side. I made a pair mittens. Joe getting limb wood.





Wednesday, Jan 22, 1908


Windy not very cold some colder at night. I cut J. hair. Wind blows hard all day.





Thursday, Jan 23, 1908


Cold and at night snowed a little.

Joe went over to C. Eat dinner of bail dish. Sowers are there. Expect to be here Saturday.

I washed colored clothes.

Got the speckled cow loose tonight.





Friday, January 24, 1908


Cold and pleasant.

Joe went to Bethel, got some grain for C. Carried an old hen for May Blossom and she was not at home. Carried it to meat market got 14 cts. A pound. I baked some and ironed some.





Saturday, January 25, 1908


Cold and quite plea(sant).

We expected sowers but did not come.

Anna, Carl and Emma came over a little while.

Just before Joe went to bed Speckled cow had a calf, a heifer. She seems all right.





Sunday, January 26, 1908


Warmer.

Emma and Carl came over a few minutes.

Charlie and Ellen came up only staid a little while.





Monday, January 27, 1908


Winds blows. Early morn it rained some. Rough day.

I clean pantry cupboard.

We expected sowers.





Tuesday, January 28, 1908


Cold and pleasant.

The sowers came today, John and Clinton Bowen.

Charlie and Powers worked here. They sowed just a few minutes before dinner.





Wednesday, January 29, 1908


Quite comftiable. Cloudy and raining.

The sowers went about five. Charlie and Powers worked here. We paid them $8.30.

Pleasant and cold. The coldest night we had this winter. 20 below zero.

Cold and pleasant, not quite as cold.

Charlie came up and got sleigh. They going to South Randolph.

I worked on rug, sewed on some strips.

Joe went and got mail.

Stormy all day. Rough and cold. The roughest day we had for years, and cold.

I finished sewing my big rug.

Rough and cold.

Have not heard from C. And Ellen yet. Henry went up through, guess did not break mountain road.

Cold and rough.

Howard and H. Broke out. Joe shoveled down to the road. H. Drove in here.





Tuesday, February 4, 1908


Cold. Sun shines bright.

Henry broke out and snow plough went through.

Joe went to (camirs). Mail has not come this week. Did not hear from Charlie’s folks.





Wednesday, February 5, 1908


Cold, the coldest night we had. 24 below.

Joe went to Rochester 2 put a note on Ned and get one in return.

Ellen and C. Got home but had a tough time of it. Pansie and Howard came over and Pansie staid and crochet a while.

Cold, but not quite as cold as has been.

I cooked and put down ham and moped.

Joe went and got mail. Letter from Deb.

Saturday February 8, 1908


Cold. Dretful cold wind.

Joe went and shoveled with Ballentine down to Gilsons. Cold night. Joe left here about three, got home at 8.





Sunday, February 9, 1908


Pleasant but cold.

The Rice boys2 came and got some sour milk.

Howard came and got some castor oil.

Ned came with letter from Ellen saying one of ther cows were sick.





Monday, February 10, 1922


It is a little warmer.

I washed just a few things.

Joe went over to Charlies. Poor track.

We got postal. Uncle William died Saturday morning the 8th.





Tuesday, February 11, 1908


Ril pleasant and warmer.

Joe went to Rochester for grain.

Uncle William buried today. Ned came with letter, C. Gone to Bethel she says cow better.

I baked a little, pies and a cake.

Ril pleasant.

I washed a few (hite) clothes.

Howard took home sleigh and Em rode over and stoped a while. Joe went home with her and got iron to fix my shoe with.

Ned brought me a note.

Joe went and got paper.

I got more cold.

I do not feel well. In bed.

Anna came over and staid a little while.

Joes two year old sheep had a lamb this morning.

I am in bed.

Little lamb is not smart. Can’t live.

I am up but have a hard cold.

Joe went and got mail but B. Had not come today so did not get Courier.

Charlie drove up and brought paper.

Rices folks have moved into (Arb) Austin’s house.

Emma and Carl came over a few minutes.

Snow plough went down by today.

Pleasant and cool.

Joe went to Bethel, carried 11 dozen and 9 eggs, got .22 per dozen. 2 boxes butter .25 per pound.

Pansie came over and staid with me today.

Charlie went to Bethel also.

Cold and pleasant. Chilly.

Pansie, Anna and Carl came over. J. Got some post cards for Pansie yestaday.

Old coset had a lamb today. We brought her into the house. Lamb seems smart.





Monday, February 24, 1908


Ril bright and pleasant.

Anna and E. And Carl and Lida came over. Lida is fine today.

We got old sheep in house.

Joe drawed some logs.





Tuesday, February 25, 1908


Bright and pleasant till about night cloudy and wind blows, some warmer.

Abbie came over a few minutes. We churned. Carried old sheep to barn.

A little warmer. Does not snow.

Joe shoveled on road for Ballentine 2 hours.

We dressed of some hens and roosters, 4 in number.





Friday, February 28, 1908


Ril pleasant.

Joe went to Rochester for grain, carried two old hens and 2 chickens, all weighed 16 pounds. Got .15 per pound.

Ellen and Charlie came up and stoped a few minutes.

Got a letter from J. Pember saying she stuck pin in hand and it broken off in there.

Pansie came over.

I cleaned shelves in pantry today.

Joe went up to Will P.

Howard and Pansie came over. Howard not been over since he was sick before.

I went over to Abbies and staid a while.

Pansie went and got her mail and stoped here a few minutes. She got her post cards.

Pleasant in morn but rough in afternoon.

Ellen came up and staid a little while. Rough when she went home. Hailed. She got the paper.

I washed colored clothes this morn.

Cloudy and warmer. Wind blows.

I washed white clothes.

Pansie came over did not stop but a few minutes.

Bright and pleasant.

I hung out my clothes today. Baked beans today.

Joe went over to Charlies, they gone for sawdust he saw them at corners.

Powers came over today.

Just at night children came over.

Joe drawing logs to house for lumber.

Emma and Carl came over and brought little pan for mince meat. I cooked my mince meat and caned it today.

Ballentine got hay out to Rix place.

Joe went to Lower Mills, Rochester.

Howard came over and staid a little while and also Pansie.

Cool night.

Wind blows.

It thaws quite a lot this afternoon.

I cooked some sausage.

Emma and Carl came over.

I made pies and moped. Joe went over to Charlies and got paper. Went as far as corner with team.

Joe went up to woods.

I fixed (bind) on old black skirt.

Bright and pleasant. Thawed the most any day this winter. Very pleasant.

At night Howard and Earnest came and got a bottle of oil.

Cloudy and rained some.

Charlie and E. Came up and did not stay but a few minutes.

At night it thundered and lightened. Rained hard at dark.

Cooler. Snowed some in afternoon.

Joe went to Rochester, carried my shoe and got fixed.

J. Heared Frank (Fylly) was sick, they had a bee today for him to help get wood.

I do not feel well, am in bed. Pansie and Howard came over, Pansie staid and done dishes and help get dinner.

I washed white clothes. Joe churned.

Howard went part way and carried Henry to Abs W. To sugar.

Windy and warmer. The snow goes fast.

Joe went over for mail. Beckworth did not come. Howard stoped here.

Cloudy.

Rochester stage went over on wheels today.

Howard went for mail but B. Had not come.

Joe began to split and pile wood today.

I finished up some rugs. I do not feel as well as usual.

Snow goes fast.

Got 22 eggs today.

Rained some. Wind blows and the sun tryed to shine. Showery.

Lonesome day. Just two years tonight since Mother died.

Rainy and cloudy.

Joe went over to Charlies, got some plaster for hens. I got 23 eggs today.

Abbie came over and did not stop but a few minutes.

Pleasant. Cooler.

Pansie and Emma stoped and left our Courier. It came in ther mail box.

I cleaned bedroom closet.





Tuesday, March 31, 1908


Pleasant and bright in morning but clouded up at noon.

Joe gone over to Charlies to fix vaporator.

I washed dark clothes.

Ellen sent me some cookies.

I had a letter from Auntie Anna tonight.





Wednesday, April 1, 1908


Pleasant.

Charlie came up with steers with lumber wagon to have Joe go to Rochester to get sap buckets. He went and got Major shod.

Emma came over and got some sour milk, said ther mother did not feel well.

Snowed a little. Cloudy and wind blows.

Charlie came up and got buckets.

Cold night.






Friday, April 3, 1908


Cold, quite pleasant.

Winn Whitaker came and took list.

Howard came and brought us some fine syrup.

Cold, only 8 above this morning. Our stove pipe burnt out.

Ellen came up to get Joe to go and help bootcher today. He went and they gave him a fine piece of meat.

I feel the cold triable.

Carl and Emma came over. E. said they got 2 little pupies.

Howard went and carried his father back to Abs Whittakers.





Monday, April 6, 1908


Ril pleasant.

Joe carried box butter over to Estha at the mines, got .25 per pound, five pounds.

Good sap day.

Emma and Carl came over. We cleaned stove pipe out.

Ril pleasant.

Joe got some wood up in shed and went over to Charlies.

I cleaned in Joe’s room.

Let out pullets for the first time.

Cold. Chilly. Hailed and snowed most all day long. Rough day.

Sun shines. Froze hard last night but at noon began to thaw.

Ellen came up so if Joe went to Rochester he could get them some pails to put sugar in. Joe went for grain but they did not have any at Chaffee.





Friday, April 10, 1908


Bright and Pleasant. About four began to cloud up and sprinkled a little.

Joe went over to Charlies to tell him he did not get grain.

Got paper and a letter from Mrs. Rix.





Saturday, April 11, 1908


Wind blows. Not very pleasant in forenoon.

Joe gone to Rochester. Did not get home till 10 o’clock. Had to wait for grain.

I do not feel very well.

Charlie came up in evening, got pails for sugar.

Joe got grain for C.

Cold, and the ground is white with snow this morning.

Little Topsy heifer had her calf, done fine.

Ellen came up with sled for grain.

Pansie came over.

Howard came over and went for mail. Got a postal from Jennie Willard.

Emma came over at night. I do not feel well.

First lambs for April, a pair of twins. Young sheep, they are not very smart.

I do not feel well, in bed.

Lambs not very smart.

Rained some in afternoon.

Howard and Anna over a few minutes.

I am in bed.

Smut face sheep had a lamb last night. Joe found it about 2 o’clock. Ril smart.

At night grows colder.

Cold but pleasant. I am up. Joe went and got paper.

Lambs are not very smart.





Friday, April 17, 1908


Pleasant.

Young sheep had a lamb, not very smart. I got it in house.

Anna came over and staid awhile. J. Went and borowed a little feed over to Abbie’s.





Saturday, April 18, 1908


Cloudy and rained at night.

Joe went over to Rochester and got some grain.

We had two lambs, one soon after J. came, one at midnight. Both young sheep. Joe set up all night.

Got 30 eggs.

Rained some. Cloudy.

We are tending lambs.

Pansie came over at evening, got some sour milk.





Monday, April 20, 1908


Cloudy, snowed a little.

School began today.

Joe went over to Abbie’s a few minutes. Had a sick sheep.

Cold night, only 8 above zero at midnight.

Seting up to tend lambs.

Cloudy and cold wind.

Old big sheep had her lambs this forenoon, ril smart.

Howard came over a few minutes.

Warmer. Pleasant in morn. At noon clouded up some.

Philip’s mother had her lamb today, ril smart.





Thursday, April 23, 1908


It rained in morning and sun shone, lots warmer, the warmest day of the year.

I washed today. Nice day to dry clothes.

I am tired tonight.





Friday, April 24, 1908


Pansie brought the mail, paper and a letter from Aunty Anna and a bank book also.

One of the small sheep (B)all face lambs had a lamb. I going to try and bring it (coset).





Saturday, April 25, 1908


Ril pleasant.

Joe gone to Rochester, Churned and carried Mrs. Esta 6 ½ pounds.

Charlie came up and got the lumber waggon and I went home with him with the stearse.

He went to Rochester with sugar, 8 hundred (looked) fine.

Ellen had stuck a nail in foot.

We went over to Charlie’s a little while.

My little coset is not very smart.

Hot for this Spring.

The old smut sheep (?) her lamb.

The warmest day we had this Spring.

I cleaned one cupboard in back room.





Tuesday, April 28, 1908


Cloudy. Rained hard in the night. Rained some in morning and a shower at night.

One of the young sheep had a lamb.

I wrote Aunty Anna and Joe went and carried it to mail box.

Joe fixed farmyard fence.

I cleaned 1 cupboard in backroom.




Thursday, April 30, 1908


Cooler. Rained some in forenoon. J. And I went over to Charlie’s, came home with express waggon.

I had a letter from a woman I wrote and and apron pattern for Pansie from Aunty Anna.

I took springs out but have not cleaned much today.





Friday, May 1, 1908


Cloudy, cool and windy.

Snowed a little. Cool.

Joe went to Rochester today.

Howard came over and brought us some syrup, fine.

I washed curtains and sheets and cleaned in my bedroom today.





Saturday, May 2, 1908


Cool. Sun shone bright in forenoon. Clouded up in afternoon.

I went over and helped Ellen wash buckets. Charlie went to Rochester with sugar.

Lyman Rix called while I was gone.

We had another lamb.





Sunday, May 3, 1908


Cold, and the ground is covered with snow.

Joe went over and got C. Express waggon to go up to Swans tomorrow.

Got a box of butter for Esta’s folks got 2 boxes.

Our last lamb came tonight from a young sheep. Does not own it very well.





Monday, May 4, 1908


Cool but quite pleasant. Rained a little in afternoon.

Joe gone up to Swans.

Howard came over and borrowed wool box.





Tuesday, May 5, 1908


Quite pleasant.

Joe gone over to help Charlie bootcher pig, got a piece of liver.

Howard brought wool box home.

We let out sheep, part of them for first time.

I washed front door and put up curtains.





Wednesday, May 6, 1908


Cool, cloudy.

Joe went to Rochester to get grain and part of lumber waggon, took 16 dozen eggs got (.15) per dozen.

Red and white cow had her calf this morning, all done fine.

I am dretful tired.

Pansie’s birthday. She caught 3 fishes and gave them to us.

Little Nancy has not done well. She does not feel very well.





Saturday, May 16, 1908


Very pleasant.

Lyman came over from old place, got 20 cts. worth pork and dozen eggs. Anna got a dozen of eggs.

Charlie and Aaron Stores took out ther sheep today.

I do not feel very well.





Sunday, May 17, 1908


Pleasant.

Pansie came over a few minutes.

J. And I went over to Charlie’s a few minutes.

At night brown cow had her calf. It is not time for her and calf is not very smart.

Lyman stoped and got 5 dozen eggs, .15 per dozen.

Pleasant.

Joe ploughed for the first time, some for potatoes.

Brown cow does not feel very good.

I do not feel very well.





Tuesday, May 19, 1908


Pleasant.

Ellen came up for express waggon to go to Robbins auction in Stockbridge.

Buck and his wife from East Bethel came over to fish.

I do not feel well in afternoon, in bed.

Lida and her mother came over, stoped a few minutes.

I am in bed.

Joe sheared Alfred today.

I washed and got in some of my sunflowers.

I guess last night was the coldest night we have had.

We are getting ready to go to morrow to the center.

I finished geathering the sunflowers today.

I ironed some today.

Very pleasant.

Joe and I went to Randolph Center. Weent down to George Pember’s to dinner.

Ellen and C. milked.

We started about 8 got home about 9 in evening.

I got me a new wrapper.

Ruth had some little pupies last night. Six.

I feel rather old.

Abbie gone to village.

Howard came over here a little while. Ellen gave me outing for night dress.

Some folks want to get boarded that cut wood in Lorenzo Bowen’s.

Joe gone to village.

I got dinner for the Bass men and they dint come to dinner.

Cloudy.

Joe and I ropde over to Abbie’s, then to mail some letters and over to Ellen’s. Eat dinner over to Ellen’s, had chicken. Fine supper.

Charlie Smith over geting sheep, staid over to Rix place.

Rainy some.

Charlie Smith took his sheep home.

Rodes took dinner and supper here.

Charlie paid Joe $5 for salting and helping about sheep.





Tuesday, October 27, 1908


Rained a little in morning, sun shone in afternoon.

Myrtie and her two children came in forenoon, took dinner. Abbie took them over to Ellen’s.

Joe drawed limb wood.

Rodes is here. Thundered hard. Rodes did not stay all night. Hard lightning.

Rodes had an hired man today. Dinner for him and Rodes.

Cloudy. Rained a bit. It is colder.

Joe went to village with potatoes. Tom was dretful lame coming home.

Graton staid here all night. Worked for Rodes.

Cold, cloudy, and rained a little in forenoon.

Graton took breakfast here, none took dinner.

Joe went to Rochester, paid tax and sent his to Pitsfield.

Cold wind, blows hard. Coldest day of the Fall. I feel the cold dretfully.

Joe went over to C. last night. Cold.

Winds blows cold.

Emma came over, took supper with us.

Joe put in some glass out to barn and in house.

Charlie came up in evening. He thought he had a cow get chooked but it wasent, she coughs.

Joe taped my shoes.

Abbie came over to see if I was using brass kettle, brought me 3 squashes.

Cloudy and a little warmer.

Joe went to (Lecton? - election?) with Charlie. He went with wood.

When we got up our calf dint feel well, we gave soda and ginger. He feels better to night.

I cleaned last chamber today.

Howard and Lida came over a few minutes.

Cool and quite pleasant till night. It snowed a little and is ril cold at dark.

I put up a can of citron, swept and moped bedroom.

Snowes and is cold.

Charles Lowell was along buy sheep.

I cut out my night dress Ellen gave me the cloth for.

Howard came over and brought the brass kettle.

Stormy some.

Ellen came up, stoped a few minutes. Joe was just going over there as she came up so she rode home. She brought the mail.

School finished today. All the children stoped a few minutes.

I finished my night dress tonight.

Joe moved pigs in pig pen.

Joe went to Bethel with six bushels potatoes.

Tom is ril lame, coming home lamer than before.

Charlie Smith came and got 2 sheep that were here.

Anna came over a few minutes.

Howard and Henry stoped here, said someone had found a doe deer killed up in Stevens. Howard and Earnest Austin found it. They think Gilson shot it.

Old Gilson went and got deer. Paul Tinkham went up to see where the deer was killed.

Charlie came up and got 2 load of leaves and put around house, staid till four. East and south side all banked.

I washed.

George Pember came, went over to Charlie’s and they were gone. Came for lumber, brought my (bureens) and carpet.

Went to look for a couple of sheep.

Went at night over to stay with Charlie’s folks.

Between four and five Howard came and got me to go over to see Abbie. She is sick in the morning.

Dr. Campbell came - bronchial trouble. I staid till after dark.

Howard got our mail, a letter from C. Smith.

Warmer. Snowed some.

I went about nine over to Abbie’s and staid till about 2 o’clock. She a little better. Dr. came.

Dr. came.

I went home and staid a little while. Am going back to sit up with Abbie, she does not seem as well.

I came home this morning. Ellen came up and staid till five with Abbie.

Joe and Charlie went over to Robbins’ place to get sleds.

I am going at five to stay all night with her. Joe carried me over.

I wrote Aunty Anna a postal today.

It been foggy all day and rained.

I washed colored clothes.

Henry went and got Suzie Esta to help them.

Went out nd see Abbie. Dr. Came for last time unless she worse.

Joe cleaned water closet. I made pies.

Joe went over to Charlie’s to see if he come and bootcher tomorrow.

Charlie and Joe bootchered. We killed 2 hogs, had good luck.

Mr. Garland came up.

Ellen sent up postal - Nettie P. wrote Elijah Pember was dead, died 1st. December, burried 3rd. Thursday.

Joe went and got a kettle over to Abbie’s, also went to C. and got meat saw and see if squezzers were there.

I tried leaf lard and inward lard.

Pansie came over and went and got mail. Got a letter from Eva P. (L.) and Joe got me one from Aunty Anna.

Cold night, the coldest.

Joe finished cutting up hogs. Got lard tried out, 3 buckets most full and the inward lard 3/8 full.

Emma came over. I sent them a piece of meat.





Monday, December 7, 1908


Rained, hailed and snowed most all day.

Joe took meat barrel up and I washed it. Too rough to go for salt.

Howard came over and got his mother’s gruel.

I am ril tired.

Cooked souce today.





Tuesday, December 8, 1908


Cold, quite pleasant. Snowed a little at night.

Joe went over to Rochester, got a bushel corse salt to salt meat. .65 cents.

We made some sausage tonight, about 43 pounds. We sit up til about midnight to make it.

Snowed some. Cold night.

Joe salted meat. I moped.

Garland and C. stoped here, going to Rochester.

Joe and I went over to see E. Boys came just before we started.

I got my puppie, took home another to keep company.

I rode over to see Abbie.

I do not feel very well. Cold.

I cut Joe’s hair.

Mr. Baletine came down to see if we want Rochester delivery here.

Thaws. Snowed in forenoon a little.

Charlie and Ellen came up and got big kettle for butchering tomorrow.

I swept chamber and are making brine for hams.
