Strasburg Herald – 18 May 1939 - Seven young people, four boys and three girls, make up the class of 1939. Graduating exercises will be held Saturday, May 20, in the Methodist Episcopal Church at eight o’clock. E. W. Kerstand, Principal of the Mattoon High School will give the address. Rev. Liston will have charge of the invocation and benediction. The class roll follows: Grayce Schroeder, Hazel Bingaman, Helen Doeding, Louis Kircher, Paul Terry, Henry Williams and Kenneth Wilson. Marjorie Engel, Chairman of the Student Activies Council will award the following medals: Grayce Schroeder, scholarship and activies; Hazel Bingaman, Dramatics; Helen Doeding, Citizenship, Paul Terry, Athletics. Louis and Paul will receive letters for basketball and softball activities and Grayce for cheerleader. The following will be given certificates of perfect attendance: Ivan Keller, Juanita Young, Joyce Reel, Ruth Reel, Billy Rosine, Lucille Bingaman and Marie Collins.

Strasburg Herald – 25 May 1939 – The most interesting news event in Strasburg the past week was the annual commencement exercises of the Strasburg High School, which was held in the Methodist church last Saturday evening. Long before the opening of the program every seat was occupied and additional chairs were added to every available space. At eight o’clock Maxine Radloff played the recessional and the class of 1939 wearing the customary caps and gowns were ushered to the stage. This was followed with the invocation by Rev. Liston. Hazel Bingamon and Grayce Schroeder gave the salutatory and valedictory addresses respectively. Special music consisted of a coronet solo by Grayce Schroeder, “Amaryllis” and “Come to the Fair: by the Girls Chorus and “Melody in F” by the senior girls. Mr. E. W. Kersten, principal of the Mattoon High School spoke on “Marks”. In this address he illustrated and explained quite vividly the fact that the things which we do make marks on ourselves and other people a great deal more than we often admit. Special awards were made by the chairman of the student activities council, Marjorie Engel. Superintendent Hewitt then presented the diplomas. The program closed with the benediction by Rev. Liston.

Miss Grace Schroeder left for Champaign Thursday to enter the university of Illinois. She graduated from the Strasburg High in May.
