This document was originally written by Urah Pearl Heald date is unknown and the original recipient was Gloria Ross Brosius. It was handwritten. I have transcribed it word for word, including misspellings, and inaccuracies. It killed me not to add my own comments to it. Evidently the pages were larger then the copier and so data at the top and/or bottom of almost all of the pages were cut off. Where this happened I have noted it with:

???????????? Cut off by copier ????????????

or something along that line. In one area the sides also got cut off. If you see a word that has part inside a parentheses and part outside it has been cut off but there is enough left that the correct word can be guessed at. Where you see a (pg. xx) is the original pages on the document. I started out trying to copy the format of the document but the difficulty of formatting handwriting and some of the automatic formatting of MS Word I finally gave that up as a lost cause. As far as the data, you see what I see.

HEALD Family History

The earliest record I have of "Our Heald Family" is that of Thomas and Joan Heald, who were born, possibly in Chesire, England about 1620. They were active members the "Religious Society of Friends" or "Quakers". Many of our "Healds Families" who came to America in the early pioneer days were members of the "Society of Friends" and when moving they located near the "Friends" communities. The route which they follow when coming to America seemed to be quite consistent from Cheshire, England to near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania' to Columbiana Co., Ohio' to Plainview Indiana; to Cedar Rapids, Oskaloosa, and West Branch, Iowa-later to California or elsewhere.

The "Society of Friends" or "Quakers" kept wonderful records. From these records has come much of our early family lines information we have today.

Even though I have very little information about Thomas and Joan Heald, let us begin these records with them as

Generation I

Thomas and Joan Heald1, both born about 1620, possible in Cheshire, England were the parents of one son, that we know of there may have been other children. That one son was:

Generation II

They had 3 children:-

2. William Heald Jr.3 b. 1671 d. - - 1677
3. Mary Heald3 b. 1675 d. - - 1677

These two younger children died the same year as their parents and the same place. It is thought, there may have been an epidemic in that part of England. That leaves to our knowledge, only one for

Samuel Heald3 was left an orphan at the age of 9 years. Who carried for him after the death of his parents is not known. He was about 23 years of age and a farmer at the time of his marriage

"Our" pioneer ancestor, Samuel Heald3 his wife and 5 children came to America from Cheshire, England in 1703. They settled in Chester Co. Pa. On the Brandywine River, where they made their home until Samuel's death in 1736.

Their arrival in America is recorded in church records by a certificate which reads "Samuel Heald and his wife Mary, both born of believing parents from the "Monthly Meeting at Morely County, Cheshire England, dated 10th mo.3rd da. 1702 Joan Heald, a signer; was received 5th mo. 30th day 1703;" taken from (Quaker arrives at Philadelphia 1682-1715) by Albert Cook Meyers.

Both Samuel and Mary (Bancroft) Heald3 were active members of the "^Old Kennett Monthly Meeting" and both are buried in the "Old Friends" burial ground at that church in Pa.

There were 10 children born to Samuel and Mary (Bancroft) Heald3 6 in England 4 in Chester Co. Pa.

The data on the above 10 sons and daughters of Samuel and Mary (Bancroft) Heald3 is not included in these records. I do have a little more, but I believe "No. 2" William and Elizabeth is the only one you will be interested in as they are the parents of "Our" Revolutionary War ancestor, "Nathan Heald" If you wish some of the others, let me know, and I will try to fish them out and send what I have.
