A sailor is in the shrouds, pointing towards John Howland in the water. John is summoning all his strength to pull himself back to the ship. I have painted Elizabeth Tilley in a yellow dress, as a 13 year old girl looking aghast at the drama unfolding before her eyes. She is unaware that the man overboard is her future husband. 2 sailors are poised, ready to catch John Howland with boat hooks.
