Nesbit Baugher

Henry Louis Baugher Family Papers

Nesbit Baugher, also a son of President Henry Louis Baugher, was born in Gettysburg on September 22, 1836. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1853 and also attended the Medical Department Gettysburg College in Philadelphia. He studied law and was admitted to the Bar in
1857. He served as a First Lieutenant with Co. B, 45th Regiment, Illinois Volunteers and was wounded seven times at the Battle of Shiloh and died at a hospital in Quincy, Illinois, May 16, 1862.

1st. Lieutenant Baugher was a member of Company B, 45th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. He was struck seven times by bullets while in command of his company at the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee. He died of his wounds at a hospital in Quincy, Illinois. An Attorney, Nesbitt Baugher was a 1853 graduate of Pennsylvania College and was a newspaper editor in Galena, Illinois prior to his enlistment in the 45th Illinois Infantry in 1861. Lieutenant Baugher was the son of Dr. Henry L. Baugher, president of Pennsylvania College.
