"Herrick Centennial 1883-1983"

FRAILEY

It Is believed the Frailey family came from Germany to the United States 1800 or before.
There Is record of the family of Daniel and Elizabeth Frailey who were In Rockingham County, Virginia, and then In Hopkins County, Kentucky.

Their children were William Frailey who married Mary Burrus 1798;
John Frailey who married Prescilla ..., perhaps Shepherd because of the Incidence of the name in the family;
Rachel Frailey married Thomas Burrus 1805, Albermarle County, lived in Allen County, Kentucky, and Rebecca Frailey married Rice Dalton 1797.

The first Frailey family In this area was that of Shepherd Frailey and wife Mary Sarver, daughter of John and Margaret Smith Sarver. They apparently lived In Shelby County and had four sons and a daughter born there in the early 1830's.
Shepherd died and Mary married (2) Dickerson Burrus.
She was born 1805 and died in the 1850's, buried Antioch Cemetery.
Known children of Shepherd Frailey and Mary Sarver were William "Free Bill" Frailey, Daniel Frailey, John Tolley Frailey, Wyatt Frailey, and Mary Frailey.

The second group came In 1833 when Mary "Mollie" Burrus Frailey, widow of William Frailey, came with eight children. William is believed to have died near Petroleum, Allen County, Kentucky, about 1823. Mollie died In Fayette County 1835 or 1836.

Their children were Elizabeth Frailey Miller, James S. Frailey, Harriet Frailey Sarver, Mary Frailey Sarver, William W. Frailey, John S. Frailey, Charles Dickerson Frailey, all children born between 1803 in Virginia and 1816 In Allen County, Kentucky.


DANIEL FRAILEY FAMILY

Daniel Frailey was born In 1830. His wife, Jennie Frailey In 1840. Both were born In the Herrick vicinity. They lived southeast of Herrick, In an area known as Buck Rough.
They had ten children, as follows:

The oldest, Phoebe, married Tom Nodine. Their children were Mattie, Lucy, and Muriel.

Nettie married Cass Burrus, they had three children: Tessie, Ora and Joanna. Harriet married Nathan Buck and had Walter, Mont, Milo and Tina. She later married George Moutrey and had Cleta, Webb and Jennie.

Cass married Mindy Burrus. To them were born: Clarence, Jennie, Lizzie, Lora, Jake, and Floyd. Betty married Francis Condiff and their children were: Walter,

Clyde, Grace, Rolla, Lewis and Fern. Grandison married Cloey Nowlin. They had Cynthia, Clara, Rollie (Derb), Pearl, Bessie, Myrtle, Harvey and Carl. Leota (Otay) married Lawrence Jennings. Their children were: Dewey, Edith, Nellie, Wave, Maye, Orville, Ira (Monk) and Gilbert.

Charlie married Lucy Lynn and to them were born: Hazel, Ray, Holly, Muriel, and Larry.

Cynthia married William Walker, their children were: Don, Roy, Harley and Pearl. Viola married Fred De Pew, they had Everett, Logan, Clessie, Velma and Ruby.

Daniel and Jennie moved to Herrick In the house now occupied by Stanley and Beulah Cable. Daniel worked as a drayman. Monk Jennings, son of Otay, married Maudeline Wilson. They had three daughters: Janet, Karen and Pamela. Janet married Danny Ballard, they have raised two children, Charlotte and Debbie.

Charlotte, the fifth generation to live In this area, married Mike Beck. They have a son, Jacob. Debbie married Curtis Horn. (Chester Horn**)

Karen married Larry Limes of Edgewood. They are the parents of Larry Lee and Malanie. They live In Edgewood. Pamela married Paul Kaiser of Edgewood. They are parents of Paul and Amanda. They live In Bethany, Illinois.

Cynthia Walker, daughter; Harley, Don, Roy Walker, grandchildren; Jennie and Daniel Frailey, parents.


JOSEPH DICKERSON FRAILEY FAMILY

Joseph D. Frailey was born 1857, son of James Frailey and Elizabeth Blair. He married Margaret Virginia Jones, daughter of Harvey and Tabitha Sarver Jones, in 1886. They homesteaded on her father's place east of Herrick in what was known as Dog Prairie. They lived there for six or seven years, then moved to a farm east of Dressor, and he worked for George Stafford for three years. They moved to their place west of Becks Creek, where they both lived until their deaths, raising hogs and cows and farming. Joseph's father came from West Virginia and his mother lived around New London.

Joseph and Margaret had eight children. Mattie died at the age of thirteen. She was buried at Pleasant Union Cemetery. Mollie married Oliver Chamberlain, Alta married Ray Jones, Jim married Bonnie Crouch, Julia married Ollie Jones, Logan married Stella Jenkin and Orpha Waldo, Hattie married John Corley and Fern married William A. Blackerby. They had seventeen grandchildren.

Joseph and Margaret were members of the Herrick Christian Church. He served as Deacon and Elder of the Church for several years. In the year 1909, there was a revival meeting in Herrick with Reverend Kirkland as minister. There was a big baptizing at Joseph's place on Becks Creek, where most churches held the baptizings at that time. Two hundred forty-four converts were baptized that day.

Joseph D. had four brothers and a half-brother and half-sister. Margaret had five brothers and three sisters. Joseph passed away in 1920 and Margaret in 1933. They were both laid to rest in Pleasant Union Cemetery. Her grandfather, John E. Sarver, donated this plot for a cemetery and school.

"Joe" and "Jennie" as they were known, were hard working people and good parents, raising their family on fifty-three acres of land. They were good to visit and care for the sick. Joe liked to help the neighbors seine the creek for fish.


WILLIAM S. FRAILEY FAMILY

William S. Frailey (1878-1948) was son of John I. and Rachel A. (Wooters) Frailey and a great-grandson of William and Mary "Mollie" Burrus Frailey. (The widowed Mollie came to the Herrick area in 1833, bringing her eight children with her.) William S. married Maude Mansfield around 1900. Commonly known as "B? Wildly," he was a railroader in this area for about forty years. They lived in Herrick and were parents of Kenneth, Carol, Treva, Halden, and Mary. Maude died in 1963.

Kenneth Frailey married Myrtle Feltenberger, daughter of Charlie and Clara Shippy Feltenberger. They lived at Herrick and later at Cowden where Kenneth worked at the railroad for fifty years. There children are Irene Frailey Milligan of Shelbyville, Billy who died in service, Betty Frailey Jones of Ramsey, Mary Jane who died as an infant, and Mickey Frailey of Cowden. Kenneth died in 1980, and Myrtle lives in Cowden.

Carol Frailey married Elsie Jones, daughter of Mo? Jones and Debbie Beck Jones. Carol was a barber, first in Herrick then at Sorento, Illinois, where he died in 1962. Elsie now lives at Athens, Illinois. They had a daughter, Ginell, who lives in Texas.

Treva Frailey married Maurice S. Culp, Son of Samuel and Etta Culp. They lived near Atlanta, Georgia, where he was assistant dean of law at Emory University. Treva died there in 1947. They had two sons, Jimmy a photographer and teacher in San Francisco, and David, a minister in Tiffin, Ohio.

Halden Frailey married Bertha Carnes, daughter of Ross Carnes and Emma Hodson Carnes Wakefield who managed the Farmers' Store in Herrick from 1927 to 1931. In 1927, Halden and two others graduated as the smallest class to ever graduate from Herrick High School.

Halden's CB handle, Railroader, reflects the fact that he worked on the railroad for 42 years, retiring as Road Master on the Norfolk and Western Railroad at Paxton. When the work took them up and down the line, Bertha helped cook for the workers. After Bertha retired from Chanute Airforce Base at Rantoul, Halden and Bertha enjoy spending time near Herrick when they are not at home in Paxton. They are parents of Eleanor Frailey Cole, who is a personnel specialist at Chanute Airforce Base, and Dr. Kermit Frailey, a veterinarian in Chrisman. Halden and Bertha have six grandchildren, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1980 at Herrick where Halden is also a fifty-year member of Cloverleaf Lodge.

Mary Frailey married Charles Kerns from near St. Louis where both worked for Carter Carburetor. After he died, she married George Stipanovich; and they late retired in Tarpon Springs, Florida.


OSCAR FRAILEY FAMILY

Oscar (Chronicle), son of John I. and Rachel A. (Wooters**) Frailey, and Alice, daughter of Wyatt and Mahala Frailey, were born and raised in Herrick. They were married in 1907. To this union seven children were born: Tennessee married Arthur Talbot. Nadine married Michael Carsello, both deceased, one child Patricia. Denzil married Don Carpenter, Denzil deceased. Wanda married Louis Quintali. Nelsine married Warren Jones, two children Gary and Diane. George married Marie Hildebrent, five children, William, Melvin, Richard, Raymond, and John, deceased. Melvin married Wanda ?orn, deceased. Two daughters, Alice and Susan. Melvin remarried to Elana, two children, Melvin II and Melva ?.

As a young man, Oscar bought and sold hay and grain. Later he owned a meat market and did his own butchering. He was a member of the Herrick band and ?cel team. Alice was active in the Royal Neighbors ?. They were ardent card players.

Oscar and Alice realized as the children grew older they would be leaving home because of lack of work in Herrick, so they moved to Chicago, where they lived for ?ty years. Oscar did interior decorating, and Alice was a chef at one of the famous restaurants in Chicago (?).

They returned to Herrick and bought the Jake Burrus farm one mile east of Herrick on the county line road. They spent many happy years there. Oscar raised and traded livestock. Alice was active in church work and many organizations.

Oscar passed away in 1949, Alice in 1976. The Oscar and Alice Frailey families love Herrick.
