St. Peter's Church, Stanley

St. Peter's Church

The foundation stone was laid on September 13, 1822, the first of three 'million pound' churches in Wakefield, (This sum was paid out of the war indemnity paid by Austria after the Battle of Waterloo). The other churches were Alverthorpe and Thornes.

At first designated the Chapelry of Stanley it was not until July 1856 that an Act of Parliament created the Parish of Stanley.

In 1911 a fire gutted the church which was then rebuilt with a new chancel added to the east end.
