The TULL Genealogy

MAOLTUILE——TULLY——TULL.

The name of TULL was evolved from that of Maoltuile the second son of Maolfreach-- Prince of Ulster, Ireland—who flourished during the 7th century—A Tull book has been published which can be ordered from book stores—John Porter Tull and his Descendants 1796-1942 by James Porter Tull--Littleton Tull born 1821— William A. Tull born 1831 settled in Carroll county Missouri in 1836—Littleton married Ruth Clinkscales of Virginia and was a son of John and was my grand- mother's brother—William was a son of Jesse and Lucretia Tull native of Kentucky -- William married Harriet F. Newton of Carroll Co. Mo. —A bible record in the D. A. R. N. S. P. 162-163 shows William Tull-son of Thomas & Leah born 1771--what state?? Thomas Tull, Jr. came to America with Richard (either his brother or his cousin) and was in Virginia before 1664--both were listed in Somerset County, Maryland as first settlers in 1661-1664—who are they—their heirs were: Thomas who married a Marshall, Isaac who married a Caldwell, John who married a Cannon, Coty who married a Graham, Elizabeth who married a Collier, Sally who married a Gill, Henry who married a Standley, Henry Clay Tull who married a Stewart, Nathan and Grover Lee Tull who went to Texas—(now who were these people is it our family)—In history of Hancock, Illinois—John P. Tull born in Kentucky, June 2, 1846 - died 1880—married 1867 Nancy J. Morley children Anna P., Perry C., William P., Ollie S., (who are they) D. A. R. records show a TULL family North Carolina Charles Tull born in Maryland, 1753 moved to Dobbs County N.C. at age of 2 (no Dobbs County now)--Who are these people?

Joshua Tull of Somerset County, Maryland, was born July 13, 1747 married Mary Sharp who was born April 30, 1733. There is a place called "TULL'S Corner" in Somerset County, Maryland. It is thought that the Tull family of Maryland came from the Jamestown, Virginia settlement (are they our people?). Delaware records in history of Delaware, Vol. 4, shows first generation Samuel Tull, wife Kesiah Coburn second generation Robert A. Tull, wife Rebecca Allen; third generation Robert E. Tull, wife Hanna S. Russell; fourth generation Oliver S. Tull, born May 29, 1880, wife Anna I. Truitt of Gaveston, Maryland (Oliver now lives in Seaford, Delaware and apparently Truitt of 1st National Bank, Seaford, Delaware, is his son, Truitt Tull). The records show a Richard B. Tull who went to Missouri (Who is he?).

This is all I have at this time, September 23, 1949.

Mrs. Ashbrook: Here is what I find about the Tulls. Do you know which branch we come from - Maryland or Delaware? Perhaps both?

In presence of: John X. Gritton John Summit John Williams Soutcha Soumot (German Script)

At court held for Lincoln County the 20th of May 1783, this Will was proved by oath of Christian Summit(sic) a witness thereto ordered to be recorded, and on the motion of Jacob Froman, the Executor therein named who made oath and executed and acknowledged bond as the law directs, a certificate granted him for obtaining a probate thereon in due form.

Settlement of Estate of Paul Froman, Will Book A Page 140. This 27th Day of March 1784, we Edmond Singleton, Peter Keeney and Christion Summit (sic) have met and appraised the estate of Paul Froman, Senr. Dec'd., agreeable to an order of Lincoln County Court.

(Note appraised nine Negroes and small personal things belonging to the deceased.) FT

By we the Prasers Viz Edmond Singleton Peter Keeny Christian Summit (German Script)

At court held for Lincoln County the 20th Day of February 1787 this inventory and appraisement was returned and ordered to Record.

Teste. Order Book for 1786-1781 page 21 is following entry: Court held Feb. 21, 1787. An inventory and appraisement of the estate of Paul Froman, deceased Was returned and ordered to be recorded.

The Will and estate settlement reflects Paul, Sr. as being a man of no small means for his day and age in the new section of Virginia that was to be the state of Kentucky in 1792. The estate appraisal was quoted in pounds and shillings because one must remember it was not until this year that final independence was achieved by the Colonies.

John Paul Frohmann, or Froman as we now find they spelled the name, no doubt experienced a most interesting life. As his wife was born about 1711, it would be assumed he was somewhat older than she and was possibly about eighty years of age at the time of his death in 1783. The record of the Hite family as written by Louise P. DuBellett in "Some Prominent Virginia Families", or Kerchival History of "The Valley", gives no information concerning John Paul Froman, Sr., other than the fact he was of the well known Froman family o? New Jersey. The Fromans were Quakers according to DuBellett and one may assume this German family may have come to the New World about 1700 when many thousands of German people came here for reason of religious persecution and for economic reasons. This is only an assumption as I have never found any record of the Frohmann. Frowmann or Froman families in New Jersey files.

Columbia, Missouri October 12, 1961

In going through my family papers, I find some data obtained from Mrs. John B. Hale of Carrollton, Mo. on December 24, 1934 that may contain some valuable genealogical information for descendants of the Cosby family. For that reason, I shall copy the article for distribution among known descendants of these fine people who were known to me all of my life in Carrollton. Being adopted and reared by the Tull family caused me to be in close contact with the Cosby family even though I was no blood relation. They shall always have great admiration. FRANK TULL.

The article written in 1934 is as follows:

Sallie Willie Cosby Tull, Mary Claiborne Cosby Hale and Clara Ann Cosby were the children of William Minor Cosby and Mary Reed Strange Cosby who were married in Fluvana County Virginia June 1839 by Rev. Walter Timberlake. Sallie and Mary were born in Fluvana County near Palmyra, Va. on the William Claiborne Strange farm located on the James River. William Minor Cosby was born Feb. 1809 at Louisa County Court House Va.. Mary Reed Strange Cosby was born June 18.1813 on the Wm. C Strange farm in Fluvana County Va.

William Minor Cosby and wife Mary Reed Strange Cosby came to Howard County Mo. at Franklin in 1842. Sallie Willie Cosby was born Apr.6.1840. Mary Cosby Hale was born Feb.11;1842 in Va. Clara Cosby Ely was born in Howard County Mo May.24. 1843. The Cosby family moved to Carroll County Mo in 1846 and bought a home just north of the Baptist Church on North Main Street.

I (Mary C Hale) do not know the name of the father and mother of Wm. Minor Cosby in Louisa Co, Va. but he had a brother named John Cosby who came to Fulton Missouri and a sister Martha and two other brothers who remained in Virginia.

My mother, Mary Reed Strange Cosby was born June 18th 1813, the daughter of William Claiborne Strange of Fluvana co Va. and Mary Perkins Strange. They owned a farm on the James River in Fluvana County Va. near Palmyra. Mary Perkins Strange was born on the farm on the James River, and died in Howard County Mo. William Claiborne Strange died in Richmond Virginia. I do not know the name of the father of William Strange but he lived in Virginia. Mary Perkins, wife of William Claiborne Strange was a daughter of Archilus Perkins who fought in the Revolution The sister of Mary Perkins Strange married James' Herndon. Her name was Nancy; They were the ancestors of the Herndon family of Carroll County Mo. The Perkins family came from Goochland County Va. I did not know any of the children of Archelus Perkins except his daughter Nancy, my grandmother and one son David Perkins who settled near Glasgo, Mo. Archilus Perkins came to Carroll County Mo. with his married daughter Nancy Perkins Herndon and died there, is buried in Oak Hill cemetery with grave marked by the DAR. My grand- mother Mary Perkins Strange died in Howard County Mo and grandfather Wm. Claiborne Strange returned to Virginia with his son William and died there. Mary Perkins Strange died in Howard County about 1850 and buried in Mt. Pleasant cemetery.

When our family came to Carroll County Mo I can remember we went to call on grandfather Archelus Perkins who lived with his daughter Nancy Perkins Herndon on the Herndon farm about a mile north of the Catholic cemetery. I can remember his tall hat and the black shawl over his shoulders as he sat in his chair with his cane in hand. He fought in the Army of Va. in the Revolution and moved to Missouri with his daughter Nancy as his wife had died at an earlier date.

NOTE: The above information was given to me by Aunt Molly Hale (Mary Claiborne Cosby Hale) at her home on the west side of North Main St. in Carrollton, Mo. in the three hundred block on Dec. 24th 1834 (1934?) when she was ninety three years of age. The dates were taken from the William Claiborne Strange Bible that was in her possession.

For some reason I thought the given name of her father was Wingfield M. Cosby but I note the grave marker indicated the name to be William. He died during the Civil War as a result of pneumonia that was contracted from sleeping out north of town to avoid being molested.

Mary Claiborne Cosby Hale become the bride of John. B. Hale of Carroll County Missouri and reared a family in the old Hale home now standing in Carrollton. (1961) Children of this family known by me were sons John- Gib- Arthur- Claiborne and Wingfield. Daughter Mary Lizzie. Also son Charles who Married Martha Guitar of Columbia Mo. and have descendants.

Sallie Willie Cosby married James Franklin Tull of Carrollton Mo and had children William Minor- John Franklin known as Frank-Lewis and Gideon who died when young; daughters Lura-Mary Victor- and Clara Tull who married her cousin Robert G. Martin and have descendants in Enid Oklahoma. William Minor married late in life but had no heirs. John Franklin known as Frank Tull married Harriet Graham Campbell Tull who married J Lewis Burruss and have daughter Sarah Frances Burruss Herndon of Arlington Va., the wife of Ben Herndon of Fulton Mo. They have three daughters.

Clara Ann Cosby married Robert Ely of Carrollton Missouri and have descendants in Springfield Missouri (1961).The Wm Minor Cosby home stood on the east side of North Main Street, the third house south of the intersection of 4th Street and North Main. Next door south was the .Ely home, while the John B. Hale homes was across the street. The James F. Tull home was a block north on the east side of North Main Street in Carrollton.

Any members of the family with an interest in genealogy will find interesting research in Virginia records of the Crosby-Minor-Claiborne-Strange and Perkins families of the James River area. I believe research will prove some of these families to have been in the early Jamestown settlement. Truly a fine people and very capable of providing strong characters for their descendants.

The statements made by Mary Claiborne Cosby Hale are copied in the exact wording as given to me in 1934.
