She was called May. The Huntley's had no children. May was a great outdoors woman.  She hunted and fished and went on long camping trips with her husband. They even had a claim in Northern Minnesota that they regularly made a four day hike to. I have several photos on file of May with a rifle and dog. They lived in Duluth and had a summer place on the Knife River.

Charles is survived by his sisters Genevieve OBrien and Lela PArker; three nephews, Bob and Dale O'Brien, and Richard PArker; and two neices, Mrs MArian Rowley and Mrs Joyce Brynteson.
Charles was born Jan 21, 1905 on the Gray Homestead, 8 miles from Sauk Centre, Minnesota. the deed to this homestead is signed by Abraham Lincoln. Our Dad donated an acre of this land for a church and Cemetery. He passed away when Charles was five years old. Charles was born with a sightless left eye but had a God given talent in music and became a noted organist
One year he had as high as 80 pupils. He screened his pupils according to their talent and many with talent received free lessons.
Charles played for silent movies. He taught 8 years at Portland State. He played the organ for the then General Eisenhower...Governor Hatfield in Salem....LArry Diehm turned the pages for Charles. He also played on KEX. The Rodger Organ Company would not put their organ on the market until Charles had ut his okay on each note...Charles was State Chairman of the American Guild of Organists for 22 years, and Dean for three years. He played 18 years at Third Church and 11 at Second Church without missing a service.  He then played 15 years at Sixth Church and four in PAsadena. He helped compile the hymnal...
Charles had many problems, he became sick inhis junior year and was flat on his back for six months. He was taken to the St Cloud hospital on a cot in a baggage car. LAter he went to California to study three years, six hours a day with Professor Hallett to get his degree in Music. Just before his final exams he suffered a nervous breakdown and came back to us at Sutherlin. Doctors found the had TB with only a few months to live. On his way home he met a Christian Science Lady at Portland ...she convinced him that God did Love him...He went to Boston and got his degree.

Aunt Blanche was a tall woman or so I remember her.  Pictures make her the tallest of the Hoffman sisters, but since Frances and Minnie were so short, I estimate that she probably stood about 5'7. She was married to Wish McGhee. They were childless. I know David Peterson was named for uncle Wish. They often visited us in Saskatchewan and I have photos of them taken on various occasions.

Fay Dupuis Hoffman [Parents] was born 28 Apr 1888 in Sauk Center, MN, USA. He died 9 Dec 1982 in Duluth, MN, USA and was buried 14 Dec 1982 in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Moose Jaw, SK, Canada. Fay married Edna Dorothy Mcintyre on 25 Feb 1918 in Duluth, MN, USA.

SOURCE: ROLLING HILLS REVIEW: HISTORY OF CRESTWYND
Mr Hoffman was born in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, in 1888. In 1907, at the age of 18, he came to Weyburn, Saskatchewan. He travelled from Weyburn, west of Assiniboia, to Valor where he settled. At this time a preemption came up and he went to Wllowbunch to file on it.There were no railways then so travel was hard and slow.
(According to certified copies in my possession, Fay homesteaded at SE1/4  34-7-2-W2nd( Limerick area, near Moose Jaw. He also applied for a preemption on NE1/4 27-7-2-W 2nd.   By 1911 he had broken about 70 acres on his homestead, and 53 on the preemption, and had 6 horses. He had a 14 x 22 lumber home and stable and hen house, and 2 granaries. L.H.)
In order to build a shack he had to go all the way to Weyburn to get lumber. These trips took four and a half days each and they had to make five trips. In the night-time they had to sleep under the wagons.
In the early days the nearest doctor was at Wllowbunch and the Mounties came around every two weeks to see that the people were getting along all right.  Their neighbor smashed his finger so Mr Hoffman took him to the doctor in Wllowbunch and had it taken care of. This was 70 miles which is quite a way for a wagon in one day.
Mr Hoffman only had one team of horses so he hired men with oxen to break up forty acres for him. This cost Mr. Hoffman $4.00 per acre.
There were no settlers at all on the trail to Weyburn but two big piles of Buffalo bones on the side of the road marked half way.  On the last one of their trips a mare had a colt and Mr Hoffman had to leave it behind at his brother-in-law's at Weyburn.
Mr Hoffman was married to Edna McIntyre from Duluth, Minnesota, on Feb 25, 1918. Mr Hoffman went to college after the eighth grade to learn a bookkeeping course which later helped him in his farming.
They sold their farm in Valor and went to the states in 1924. They they worked for the park department in Duluth. They came back to Canada in 1930 and lived on a farm about 7 miles west of Crestwynd. They stayed there for eighteen years. When they were at Valor they farmed a half section of land and when they were at Crestwynd the also had a half section. In 1945 they bought their first tractor but up until then had a two horse drill and everyone used it. In 1945 their crop was frozen when it was all up and they were told that it would never come back - but it did and it was the best crop ever... Mr Hoffman was 78 when he retired. he was the youngest in the family, having five older sisters...Mr and Mrs Hoffman had two sons, Durell and Donald, the former is still living...

Catherine Stevens was born 1 August 1792. She was a mother at age 17; her
last child was born when she was 39. When she was around 67 years of age she
left her established home in New York for a pioneer life in Minnesota.
About ten years later she moved again to establish another home in another
pioneer situation. What an amazing woman.

Her children must have taken turns caring for her in her very old age as the
1880 census shows her living with son Albert in Wright Co. She died in 1883
at age 91 in Sauk Centre. Family notes and other records indicate that she
was blind for many years. She is buried in Lake Amelia Cemetery.

That ability to live long could be in the genes as the two daughters (Polly
Ann and Harriet) who came to Minnesota made it to be very old ladies, too.
(Or maybe it was the Minnesota water?)

On occasion this man is referred to as Samuel Hophni but it is very rarely. His will is Hophni, and as that is the only legal document we have I have chosen to call him simply Hophni.

Examination Nov 5, 1849,
the will of Hophni was  witnessed by  Robert Ashman (the husband of Charlotte McElroy, His wife Lydia's sister) and Joseph R Andrews (who appears to have written the will for an ailing Hophni, had it in his safe keeping and then apparently died before the date in Nov) Hophni who had Andrews write the will in question on 22 Sept 1749 had it subsequently witnessed in his presence at the request of Andrews by Robert Ashman. Hophni died about one week later, Sept 30, 1749 and Andrews appears to have died sometime between the writing of the will and Nov 5 1749.  Hophni's eldest son David then got his father's will from the son of Andrews and the deposition declares that the paper in question is indeed Hophni's will.

Charles Frederick, who will form the subject of this biographical sketch, came to Pope County in 1882, settled where he now lives, on section 11, of Westport township. He has a quarter section of excellent farmland, all well improved, and and does a general farming and stock-raising business. He was born in Orange county New York, July 5, 1856. His parents were Jacob and Mary J,(Smith) Frederick, whose history is given elsewhere in this album. Up to the time Mr. Frederick was eighteen years of age he was nearly blind, occasioned by a weakness of his eyes. Most of his school days were spent in Wright county, Minnesota. At the age of 17 years he engaged in farming in Stearns county, Minnesota, going there in 1867, and from that locality he came to Pope county, where he makes a specialty of raising Korman Horses.
Mr Frederick was married July 26, 1882 to Miss Jessie Perkinson, who was reared and educated in Indiana. She is the daughter of William Perkinson, a farmer, Mrs Frederick being the youngest of three children in her father's family. The Mother died in 1862, and the father lives in Todd county, Minnesota, on a farm. Our subject and his wife are the parents of three children--Altha May, Malvo and Benton
In politics Mr Frederick is a Democrat. In addition to his farmwork, proper, he has run a threshing machine for thirteen years in Stearns and Pope counties. He has always taken an active interest in everything calculated to benefit the locality in which he lives, and is justly rated as one of the most enterprising and leading citizens of the northwestern portion of the county.
