More Research on the John Fulbright Line

Bill Eddleman

I wanted to report on some research that Hope and I had a chance to do on some of the sons of John Fulbright (son of Johann Wilhelm--the Springfield family) when we were in Crawford and Washington Counties in Missouri last July. I found at least a little information on David, Daniel, John, Martin, and William as follows:

David "Judge" Fulbright Records:

10 Nov 1830. David Fulbright of Washington Co., Mo. purchased 80 acres from the U. S. Government in present-day Crawford Co., being the East half, NE quarter, Section 14, Township 37 North, Range 2 West (U. S. Government Land Office Records, Certificate No. 866, File No. MO0580.287).

Crawford Co., Missouri Circuit Court Records, Book A; May 1831 Term; p. 2

James Campbell commissioned as Sheriff of Crawford Co., being elected in August last, with William Montgomery, David Fulbright, James Wilson, Aaron Spann, and James O. Gillespie his security. [Very important point is that present-day Laclede Co. was included in Crawford. Thus, David Fulbright and family moved from their land on Courtois Creek in present-day Crawford Co., Mo. to Laclede Co. between Nov. 1830 and May 1831.]

Washington Co., Missouri Deeds, Book E, p. 471

10 Sept 1831. David Fulbright and Milly, his wife, of Crawford Co., Mo. to Moses Scott of Washington Co., Mo. For the sum of $500, 80 acres, being East half, Northeast quarter, Section 14, Township 37 North, Range 2 West. Signed David Fulbright, Milly (x) Fulbright (relinquished dower rights). Attest Daniel (x) Fulbright, Aaron Spann, Justice of the Peace.

Crawford Co., Missouri Circuit Court Records, Book A; May 1832 Term; p. 20

David Fullbright on grand jury.

[Searched through page 50--no more mentions of Fulbright. In 1833, present-day Laclede Co. was part of Pulaski Co.]

John Fulbright Record:

Washington Co. Marriage Book A, page "b"

[As transcribed on-line has this entry; gone from the rebound original in Potosi!!]: "Spencer O'Neal & Neomy Woolsey married on 15 May 1818 by John Brickey, JP at Washington Co., Mo. Terr. witnesses: John Fulbright, Martin Fulbright"

[Is this John the father of Martin or John the brother of Martin????]

Martin Fulbright Records:

[see above]

Crawford Co., Missouri Circuit Court Records, Book A; May 1832 Term; p. 22

Martin Fullbright on jury in case of Samuel Travis vs. William Coppage.

p. 25

Continued. Jury failed to agree and was dismissed without prejudice.

William Fulbright Records:

31 May 1824. William Fullbright (no county of residence given) purchased 80 acres from the U. S. Government in present-day Crawford Co., being the East half, Northwest quarter, Section 17, Township 37 North, Range 2 West (U. S. Government Land Office Records, Certificate No. 446, File No. MO0570.449).

Washington Co., Missouri Deeds, Book B, p. 199; 6 Nov 1824.

William Fullbright and Ruth, his wife, of Washington Co., Mo. to William Friend and Augustin Friend. For the sum of $400, 80 acres which he purchased of the U. S. Government, being all the East half of the Northwest quarter of Section No. seventeen, Township No. thirty-seven North, Range 2 West. William and Augustin Friend are also empowered to obtain a patent on said land, for and by virtue of a certificate said Fullbright holds for money paid for the land (No. 445, dated 13 Nov 1824). Signed Wm. Fulbright, Ruth (x) Fulbright. Witness N. Henderson, Justice of the Peace. Recorded 9 Jun 1825. [The nature of this deed, suggesting William had not gone to the local land office in Jackson, Mo. to pick up the patent, suggests this may be the approximate time the family went to Tennessee. They were supposed to have settled Springfield in 1829.]

I think I have mined out Crawford Co. for Fulbright information, but we were unable to get into court and probate records in Washington Co.. I have learned that Pulaski Co. records except for probate burned in 1903, so we may have another "gap" in information.
